Scholarship Opportunity for Freshman


Balanced Man Scholarship Opportunity

Each year, Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) awards the Balanced Man Scholarship to well-rounded incoming freshmen men.  While academic excellence is one of the criteria for applicants, this award is not determined solely by academics – the purpose of the Scholarship is to recognize and reward those who have led balanced lives.  The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship, and over $1,000 more in scholarships and prizes will be awarded to second and third place winners, along with other finalists.  Please note that applying for or accepting the Balanced Man Scholarship in no way commits you to joining Sigma Phi Epsilon.  To find out more about the Balanced Man Scholarship and to fill out your application, please visit sigepmaryland.com. Police Auxiliary is currently hiring for the Fall 2012 semester and beyond. We are seeking applicants who are students in the University of Maryland system looking to gain experience in the field of criminal justice. Police Auxiliary offers a good student job with flexible hours as well as the opportunity to work directly with law enforcement personnel. Student Police Aides work a variety of shifts to include patrol shifts, building security, traffic control, special events, and many more. New hires are required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week to include one specified night or weekend shift. Title: Research Assistant
Duties: The intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist in the development and
maintenance of the Maryland Community Services Locator website (www.mdcsl.org). Specific duties include:

Responsibilities:
Verify the accuracy of program listings in the database using online sources and telephone surveys
Data entry (using Excel) for responses from provider surveys
Assist in augmenting the comprehensiveness of the existing database through database
comparisons, resource inventories, etc.
Outreach to community providers to promote awareness of the MDCSL in Maryland
Field work with community providers to promote awareness and use of the website
Assist with dissemination of materials to providers
Other duties as assigned

Government of D.C. - Office of Citizen Complaint Review, Washington, District of Columbia   

The District of Columbia's Office of Police Complaints (OPC) is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated intern for the Fall semester. OPC is a government agency that receives, investigates, and resolves citizen complaints of police complaints filed against the Metropolitan Police Department officers. OPC provides an independent and impartial forum for the processing of police misconduct complaints and promotes the highest attainable standard of integrity, professionalism, and accountability in the District's police department. Interns work alongside experienced staff on a variety of projects. The primary duties of interns are to assist with the agency's community/public relations with the preparation of Freedom of Information Act responses, internet research, media relations, various community outreach activities, and drafting recommendations. Additional intern duties also may include assisting with special projects, assisting with witness statements, collecting and reviewing evidence, and transcribing tapes.

QUALIFICATIONS
Students with an interest in government affairs, community relations, civil rights, and public policy are strongly encouraged to apply. Fall Internships are unpaid, but they can be done for academic credit.
