Students for Sensible Drug Policy Presents: Know Your Rights!

There will be a Free screening of "10 Rules for Dealing with Police" co-sponsored by Students for Sensible Drug Policy, Students for Liberty at UMD, and Community Roots. The film, created by an organization called Flex Your Rights, is designed to inform individuals on how to best handle a police interaction. Following the film Steve Silverman, Executive Director of Flex Your Rights, will provide commentary and answer audience questions.

Winter/Spring Registration Reminders

Winter Registration
Winter registration begins Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 7:30 AM for ALL students.  Winter is a great opportunity for students to get ahead in their requirements and/or take smaller, more discussion-based courses.  Registration for the winter session is completed through Testudo.   Winter term begins Wednesday, January 2, 2013 and ends Wednesday, January 23, 2013.  All students are limited to enrolling in one course during winter term.  For more information on the winter term including billing, registration, requirements and deadlines, please visit the winter term website at: winter.umd.edu.  A full list of winter term courses are available on Testudo.

DC Youth Risk Behavior Survey - Temp Employment


District of Columbia Youth Risk Behavior Survey (DC YRBS) needs people who are willing and able to travel to all parts of the city, and not just where they live, who have an interest in the health and well-being of adolescents to help administer questionnaires in 112 middle and high schools.  Assuming successful completion of training and performance in the field, you can expect to work 2 to 4 days per week for up to 5 weeks (i.e. end of October through the end of November) with the possibility of additional work into early December.  If you can commit to this schedule without distraction, we encourage you to apply.

Cops Say Legalize Drugs: Ask One Why!

Retired Major Neill Franklin will give a presentation about why, as a former officer, he believes the prohibition of drugs has failed and explain why he advocates for a system of legalization and control.  To support his position he draws evidence from current studies, recent events, and his personal experience of being a Narcotics Agent for the Maryland State Police.  Major Franklin is a 34-year police veteran from Baltimore, Maryland, and is now the Executive Director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP).

CJSA Meeting: Kohl’s Assets Protection Division



CJSA will host a networking session with Kohl’s Assets Protection division on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 6:30PM in Taliaferro Hall room 1101.  Kohl’s is currently recruiting for their Loss Prevention Internship Program.  The Kohl’s Loss Prevention Internship Program is designed to give students the knowledge and experience needed to explore what an exciting career in retail Loss Prevention management is all about. The training program is designed to give you the experience you need in Loss Prevention to prepare you for running a successful retail business with a focus on the protection of company assets.  While many people may not be interested in the private sector, Kohl's is a great opportunity to kick-start your criminal justice career.  Past CJSA members have graduated and began working in retail assets protection; they have enjoyed the job, earned excellent benefits and in many cases commanded a higher salary than most entry level jobs including law enforcement.

Job Description
As an Investigative Student Trainee (Intern) in the Department of Education Office of Inspector General, the incumbent will learn about the tasks related to gathering, acquiring, and developing resource materials and other information in support of law enforcement activities to achieve the mission of the organization.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist assigned staff to compile reports on research conducted and updating administrative records
  • Use software applications such as spreadsheets, database inquiries, word processing and desktop publishing.
  • Develop profiles, criminal history and current location of subjects using state and federal records along with commercial databases.
  • Prepare written and statistical reports for use in investigations.
  • Assist Special Agents with case work, to include assisting with interviews and document reviews. 
  • Learn about the day to day operations of a federal law enforcement office and federal government employment.

CCJS Advising will have limited advising hours beginning Wednesday, October 3, 2012 – Friday, October 5, 2012.  All CCJS Advisors will be out of the office for a conference.  Peer advising will be available Oct 3 – Oct 5 from 12:00PM – 4:00PM.  Peer advisors will be available to answer general major questions.  Please note during this time audits will not be completed.  Additionally, e-mail will be answered on a limited basis.  Advisors will return to the CCJS Advising office Monday, October 8, 2012.

Testing Technicians will administer a written psychological test to DC police and firefighter applicants once a week on Tuesdays at 8 am and occasional Saturdays. This job requires setting up interviews, scanning and grading the tests, working directly with a psychologist, doing general administrative work, and occasional paid take home work when available if desired.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be available all Tuesdays from 7:30am to approximately 3:30pm, NEVER later than 8:00am when the testing starts. Students working on psychology or criminal justice degrees a plus. Must have own transportation to DC (location is too far from the metro). Great public speaking and communication skills. Committed to the job at least through May, 2013.
