Seminar: The Pre-K to Prison Pipeline: Changing the Odds for Boys of Color

Educational and incarceration trends among boys of color remain a concern within public and academic dialogues. This symposium brings leading scholars to campus to discuss the determinants and consequences of the “Pre-K to Prison Pipeline,” as well as action within the academic and public spheres that can bring an end to the cycle. The panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Ruth Zambrana, and feature four distinguished guests, Dr. Howard Stevenson, Dr. Becky Pettit, Dr. Oscar Barbarin and Dr. Pedro Noguera. The event will culminate with a reception and book signing at the David C. Driskell Center.

Alternative Breaks are year-long team experiences that dive into social issues and communities across the world.  Alternative Breaks culminate with 27 service-learning trips during winter, spring and summer breaks. Participants travel both locally and internationally to engage in active service, learn about social issues, and build upon community assets all while making lasting memories and great friends.

Center for Addictions, Personality, and Emotion Research
Cognition and Emotion Relationship Study

Description:

Do you get angry or frustrated easily? Do your emotions feel intense or out of control? Do you say/do things when upset that you wouldn’t do otherwise? If you answered YES to these questions you may be eligible to participate in a research study at the Center for Addictions, Personality, and Emotion Research at the University of Maryland. This study examines the relationship between cognition and emotion. Participation requires three (3) visits at our center. The visits will consist of a psychological evaluation (at no cost to yourself), questionnaires, and participation in several computer games. You also will be asked to speak about a stressful event.

The First session will take approximately 2 hours, and you will earn $20. The Second and Third sessions will take 30-45 minutes at most, and you will earn between $12 and $25 depending on your performance on a computer task.
Qualifications: 
-Must be between the ages of 18 and 45

Title:          Research Assistant

Duties:       The intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist with various Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) projects, including the projects below:

Maryland Community Services Locator Project (www.mdcsl.org)

  • Verify the accuracy of program listings in the database using online sources and telephone surveys
  • Data entry (using Excel) for responses from provider surveys
  • Assist in augmenting the comprehensiveness of the existing database through database comparisons, resource inventories, etc.
  • Outreach to community providers to promote awareness of the MDCSL in Maryland
  • Field work with community providers to promote awareness and use of the website
  • Assist with dissemination of materials to providers
  • Other duties as assigned

Immediate Opening For A Student Producer For ForensicWeek.com

Professor Mauriello (CCJS 320) has an immediate opening for a student producer for ForensicWeek.com, a weekly show.  As producer, the student is responsible for making contact with weekly guests; add guest to Google+; conduct a test to make sure guest equipment works; produce graphics/ video clips as needed; produce promos to advertise each show; and handle the broadcast of each show.  This position may be eligible for BSOS internship credit.  Students with have a background in computer sciences, TV production, A/V-internet-social media, or writing and journalism are encouraged to apply.
