ACES Cybersecurity Minor - Applications Open Dec 1

The ACES Minor takes a multidisciplinary approach to cybersecurity in which students gain knowledge about many of the fields (criminal justice, business, public policy) that intersect in cybersecurity. With an emphasis on hands-on experiences, students will gain practical skills through coursework, seminars, group projects, internships, and research, both on and off campus. Students will also have the opportunity to participate with students in the ACES Living-Learning Program as peer mentors, tutors, and advisors. The minor program will also include regular interactions with corporate and governmental leaders in cybersecurity, who will serve as both mentors and professional contacts.

Words of Engagement

The Words of Engagement Intergroup Dialogue Program brings together students from various social identify groups to explore the complexities of culture, marginalization, and privilege.  Dialogues are 7-week, 1-credit courses held in the first and second halves of the semester that satisfy the General Education cultural competence Requirement (i.e. three credits).  Students do not need to take all three three credits in the same semester.

Research Opportunity: Apply to the 2017 Maryland Summer Scholars Program

Image result for maryland center for undergraduate researchThe Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project.  

For the summer of 2017, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 25 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. [Please note: if your proposed research requires extended travel outside of the College Park area, you may apply for a supplementary travel award of up to $1,000.]

Students who carry out Maryland Summer Scholars projects gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Many Summer Scholars turn their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their junior or senior year.

Last Day to Withdraw from A Course - TODAY Nov 7

Today, November 7, 2016 is the last day for undergraduate students to withdraw from one course (up to 4 credits) for the current Fall 2016 semester. If you have questions about dropping a course, please contact the either CCJS Advising or BSOS Advising Center.

Please Note, you will need to schedule an appointment with a BSOS Advisor if:

  • You need to drop a course and you have already dropped a course this semester
  • You are on academic probation or dismissal and would like to drop a course
  • You need to drop a single course that is more than 4 credits (e.g. certain language courses or research/internship that is more than 4 credits)

“An additional drop period for undergraduate students begins at the close of the schedule adjustment period and ends at the end of the tenth week of classes. During the drop period a student may drop a maximum of four credits or one course. Courses dropped during this time (after the schedule adjustment period) will be recorded on the student’s transcript with a “W” notation for undergraduate students only. (This mark is not used in computing the semester or cumulative GPA.) No notation will appear on the graduate record for courses dropped during the drop period.”

This event is aimed at anyone who is interested in interning in a foreign country. You will learn about options that exist through UMD and off campus, and the benefits of international work experience. The panelists will also share their experiences abroad. 

The 4 panelists attending represent a wide range of majors and internship destinations:

Spring 2017 Government Affairs Intern - National Sheriffs' Association

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) is currently seeking a part-time Government Affairs Intern for Spring 2017 with a strong interest or previous experience in criminal justice and homeland security policy issues to assist the activities of the Government Affairs Division.

A student in his/her junior or senior year or in a graduate program is preferred, but not required, as the position requires significant legislative research and analysis.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in pursuing a career in public policy or lobbying to obtain firsthand experience and make connections with leading organizations in Washington. The internship will also provide the individual with the opportunity to attend the 2017 Winter Conference in Washington, DC, and to assist in preparations for the 2017 Annual Conference in Reno, NV. The internship will provide the individual with the opportunity to manage specific issues within the Government Affairs portfolio on a range of criminal justice and homeland security issues.
