Structural Racism & Youth Violence Symposium

This symposium brings together two leading experts to discuss the impact of structural racism and youth violence. 
The speakers will examine how youth experiences of violence limit potential development, increase disadvantages in already marginalized communities and contribute to the increasing criminalization of young people based on race. 
Both speakers will also talk about the future research needs in the field and alternative policy solutions.

Introduction to Careers at the U.S. Department of State Session - Feb 22

Image result for department of stateThe Federal and Global Fellows Office will be hosting a senior U.S. Department of State official in Marie Mount Hall 2407 on Wednesday, February 22.

A U.S. Department of State Representative will provide an introduction to careers at the Department of State and will go in-depth on the following:

  • Foreign Service Officers and Civil Service positions
  • Career tracks options
  • Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT), Personal Narratives (PN), Qualification Evaluation Panel (QEP), and Oral Assessment
  • Job application process and tips

Agenda:
1 - One-on-One session opportunities (9:00 AM - 11:30 AM)
2 - Lunch (12:00 PM -12:30 PM)
3 - Presentation on Careers with State Department (12:30 PM - 1:30 PM)
4 - One-on-One session opportunities (1:30 PM - 4:00 PM)

Students  must RSVP to attend.  Students can RSVP here.  If you are interested in doing a one-on-one coaching session, limited slots are available. Please list multiple half-hour time slots (from 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM or from 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM) when you are available.

Maryland General Assembly (MGA) Internship Program - Accepting Applications

Image result for maryland state houseConsider applying for the Maryland General Assembly (MGA) Internship Program!  The MGA internship program is a two-semester course open only to students who have earned superior academic records and who have demonstrated effective writing skills.  

Interns serve at the MGA for 16-20 hours per week during the spring legislative session (January-April 2018). Their assignments develop invaluable professional skills. In previous sessions, interns researched proposed legislation, responded to constituent mail, organized news conferences, and wrote and delivered testimony. The internship (ENGL388M/HONR379W) conveys six credits.

In the preceding fall semester, students will take a three credit course (ENGL381/HONR368A) which teaches students the skills that the internship will require. In addition, students learn about the MGA and Maryland state politics.
*ENGL 381 satisfies the Professional Writing Requirement for the General Education Program, and *ENGL 388M satisfies one Scholarship in Practice requirement.
