The Literacy Lab works to close the achievement gap by providing pre-K and elementary schools with evidence-based literacy intervention, full-time literacy tutors to implement the model, and assessment tools and a coaching support structure that ensures the success of the program and students. CCJS Departmental Honors Program - accepting applications for Fall 2020 cohort

Interested in elevating your academic experience and standing out among your peers? Consider the CCJS Departmental Honors Program!   The CCJS Honors Program is a unique opportunity for undergraduate CCJS majors to challenge themselves academically.  The Honors Program is comprised of small, interactive, and rigorous courses.

Students graduating from our Honors Program receive a departmental honors notation on their diploma and have the opportunity to add a very unique experience to their resumes.  Many of the CCJS Honors Program graduates have attended Ivy League graduate and law schools, including the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Social Work, Georgetown Law, and the UMD CCJS doctoral program.  Additionally, some Honors students have moved on to careers with agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security, and Teach For America. 

Requirements for Admission:
  • A declared CCJS major
  • A cumulative GPA of at least a 3.25
  • A minimum 3.40 GPA in all CCJS major coursework
  • Satisfactory completion of CCJS 100, CCJS 105, and CCJS 200
  • Students must present evidence of satisfactory writing
  • Student should be entering their Junior year in Fall 2020
  • At least 4 full consecutive semesters remaining at the University of Maryland starting Fall 2020
Meeting all requirements does not guarantee admission.  Only the top applicants will be admitted into the CCJS Honors Program.

How to Apply:
If you are interested in applying to our Honors program, please submit the following:
  • The CCJS Honors application (available on the CCJS website)
  • An unofficial transcript
  • A one page statement explaining:
    • Why you are a suitable candidate for the CCJS Honors Program (e.g. prior research, passion, ability to conduct research)
    • Why you would like to participate in the CCJS Honors Program and how participation will help you reach your career goals
    • The area of Criminology & Criminal Justice in which you are most interested
  • A writing sample that is approximately 3-5 pages in length (the writing sample can be a portion of a larger paper or a paper on its own)
  • If a student completed either CCJS 200 or CCJS 300 pass/fail in Spring 2020, they must have their instructor complete the Statement of Proficiency
All application packets must be submitted to CCJS Advising.  Applications will be accepted via e-mail ccjsadvising@umd.edu.   All applications are due by 4:00 PM on Monday, June 1, 2020.

Fall 2020 Internship Opportunities at CESAR

Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) Research Internship Announcement (for credit)
Position: Undergraduate/Graduate Internship Opportunity –Fall 2020
Title: Research Assistant
Duties: The intern’s primary responsibilities will be to assist with a variety of
substance use focused research projects.

Research Projects
  • Opioid Use Disorders Project: Funded through the MPowering the State initiative, this collaborative project between the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore seeks to combine UMCP and UMB’s expertise in preclinical, clinical and policy areas to address the opioid epidemic in the state of Maryland and the nation, with the goal to better understand opioid use disorder, develop treatment strategies, and create recommendations for treatment research and education. CESAR is currently working on several projects as part of this initiative:
  • Novel therapies to reduce opioid use: This project aims to capitalize on new findings from the field of placebo research to develop strategies to reduce opioid use in methadone patients. As part of this clinical trial to test the efficacy of pairing placebo dosing with the administration of methadone, CESAR will be spearheading the effort to conduct substance use surveys and toxicological analysis of urine specimens from study participants. Students may be involved in data analysis and report preparation as part of this study.
  • Epidemiologic studies of opioid related emergency department (ED) admissions: This study will analyze the medical records of patients in emergency departments to better understand patterns of opioid use by analyzing electronic patient records for drug related admissions maintained by seven Maryland hospitals. Students may be involved in data analysis and report preparation as part of this study.
Qualifications: GPA Requirement: 3.0 minimum. No prior research experience is required. This candidate must have strong attention to detail. Preferred skills (not required): interest in epidemiology/public health research/substance use, knowledge of Microsoft Excel and/or SPSS.

Hours: 10 hours/week minimum. Ability to commit a greater number of hours is a plus! 

Compensation: Internship open to undergraduate and graduate students. May be used to earn BSOS, HLTH, or CRIM internship credit (3-6 credits). These credits may be used to fulfill elective and program credit requirements. Both part-time and full-time interns will be considered.

The Direct Action and Research Training (DART) Center will hold an online info session on Wednesday, April 15 at 6 pm eastern/5 pm central to discuss careers in community organizing. All UMD students and alumni welcome, particularly those graduating before January 2021. RSVP here.
