NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates: The Scope and Consequences of Hate Crime Victimization in the South in Little Rock, AR

The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program offers 10 talented undergraduates a funded opportunity to engage in research to understand the 1) experiences, perceptions, and concerns of Muslims in Arkansas with regard to stigmatization and victimization based on religion, 2) the extent and scope of anti-Muslim hate crimes in Arkansas, 3) policies, procedures, and decision-making processes of the law enforcement who handle hate crime incidents in Arkansas, and 4) perceptions of lawmakers as to the extent of hate crimes against Muslims, as well as the obstacles in passing hate crime legislation in Arkansas. This REU site is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the primary goal is to provide strong undergraduate students with the opportunity to work with faculty on research projects that can make a meaningful impact in the community and discipline

Who Should Apply?

Any student who is currently a sophomore, junior, or senior in an undergraduate college/university is eligible to apply.  We strongly encourage students who are interested in graduate education in criminal justice or a related field.  We are also committed to working with students who are in underrepresented groups in criminology and criminal justice.

Applicants must be:

  1. An undergraduate student who is in good standing at their academic institution and currently enrolled in classes.
  2. An undergraduate student who is has a 3.0 and above GPA at their current academic institution.
  3. An undergraduate student who is a U.S. citizen, U.S. nationals, or permanent resident of the United States.
  4. An undergraduate student who is willing to relocate to Little Rock, AR for 8 weeks during the summer.

Description

Work with FCNL’s staff in Washington, DC throughout June and July to advance our witness for peace on Capitol Hill. FCNL offers several paid summer internships working in distinct parts of the organization on federal policy, grassroots organizing, or nonprofit management.

Participants should expect to engage in a variety of tasks depending on which department within FCNL they are assigned to. Past summer intern projects have included:

  • Researching and consolidating information about members of Congress
  • Delivering letters to Hill offices
  • Assembling mailings to donors
  • Creating an alumni/ae directory of past participants of FCNL’s young adult programs
  • Phone banking for FCNL events
  • Conducting a comprehensive survey of Quaker meetings
  • Coordinating a letter to the editor campaign
  • Working with FCNL’s constituent database

Interns are also encouraged to seek out and attend virtual forums at think tanks, congressional briefings, coalition meetings, and other networking events (about 1 or 2 each week).

A completed application will include:

  • An application form.
  • Resume (including education, work, extracurricular, and volunteer experience).
  • One letter of recommendation from a reference. Letters are due on the day that applications are due, March 25, 2022. No exceptions will be made for late letters. Letters should be sent to jobs-intern@fcnl.org.

Benefits

FCNL offers a stipend of $3600 for the eight-week internship. Interns are expected to follow the FCNL work week which is M-F from 9-5:30 pm EST every day with an hour break for lunch. Interns are expected to be physically located in the Washington, DC area and will be working in person in the FCNL office at least three days a week. The internship program begins with orientation on June 6, 2022, and the program runs through July 29, 2022. Orientation is required and you are required to be available for the full two months.

In addition to working closely with a professional staff member at FCNL, interns will have opportunities to participate in lobbying, organizing and policy events.

The Delaware State Parks Internship Program provides opportunities for qualified students and career-focused graduates to apply learned theory and experience to practical situations and to observe an organization first-hand. A quality field experience facilitates and enhances educational and vocational processes. The Delaware State Parks Internship Program is a training program that provides practical work experience and valuable training in the many and varied careers in the state park system. Interns in the program engage in education, management, administration, and environmental stewardship activities to increase and promote the environmental awareness of our visitors.

Interns apply for a specific position and are assigned to a specific site with a field expert who will mentor and supervise the intern’s activities. ● This 12-week program provides students interested in criminal justice with rewarding and substantive work assignments that contribute to the mission of the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services to improve public safety in Maryland.

● This program provides an opportunity to network with professionals from the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services, public safety partners throughout the State to include but not limited to Behavioral Health Administration, Maryland Chiefs of Police Association, Mental Health Association of Maryland, and others who will support the incumbent’s professional growth and career interests.

Primary functions of this position will include supporting the implementation of the Justice Reinvestment Act (JRA) and the Justice Reinvestment Oversight Board, assisting with the reporting of performance measures to stakeholders, managing capacity building opportunities, and assisting in coordinating various Workgroup meetings.

Research and Analysis Intern

The Intern will experience the inner workings of state government from the vantage point of the Executive branch. This Intern will assist the Research, Analysis and Evaluation Division with collecting various criminal justice data and research to assist the Agency with making data-driven decisions and utilizing evidence based practices.

Criminal Justice Program Intern

Primary functions of this position will include operationally supporting the Maryland Criminal Intelligence Network (MCIN) initiative. MCIN is a criminal justice strategy, coordinated at the local, state, and federal levels targeting gangs, drug, firearms and human trafficking. MCIN is particularly focused on those criminal networks that are impacting multiple jurisdictions and accomplishes this by sharing information across borders. It is a key element of Maryland’s public safety strategy and provides the basis for data-driven decision making both operationally and for policy development.

Crisis Intervention Team Center of Excellence Internship

Primary functions of this position will include providing technical support to the CITCE-Collaborative Planning and Implementation Committee via stakeholder engagement, workgroup meetings, research, note-taking, and report writing.

The District of Columbia Sentencing Commission is an independent agency of District of Columbia government consisting of 17 members. The agency staff presently consists of 7 employees. The Commission developed, implemented, and oversees the sentencing guidelines used by judges in felony cases sentenced in the Superior Court in the District of Columbia. The Commission monitors compliance with the guidelines and evaluates the use of departures, provides training to judges and practitioners on the application of the sentencing guidelines application, conducts research on felony sentencing trends and patterns for the District of Columbia, and provides sentencing data to a wide range of district, federal, and academic partners   

The Commission is also responsible for developing, operating, and maintaining an extensive data system, GRID, which integrates data from the DC Superior Court, Court Services Offender Supervision Agency, and the Metropolitan Police Departure.  This integrated data system enables the agency to analyze arrest, conviction, and sentencing information throughout the complete criminal justice life cycle of a felony case and provides data for policy changes.

Conditions of Employment

The Research Analyst reports directly to the Executive Director and serves at their pleasure. This is an excepted service appointment, and the Research Analyst will be required to become a resident of the District of Columbia no later than 180 days after his or her appointment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Research Analyst include: (1). Performs moderately complex research analysis studies, and documents developed and distributed, including research design, statistical analysis, qualitative studies, evaluation studies and development of trend and longitudinal analysis and the development, generation, and distribution of standards, regulatory, and ad hoc research, and statistical reports. (2). Implements established and necessary procedures to support and facilitate statistically sound research methods, research design and identifies appropriate data to be utilized. (3). Obtains, reviews, and revises information relative to assigned research and data analysis practices and identifies the need for additional research methods and statistical procedures when warranted. (4). Conducts research and statistical analysis of felony sentencing related issues. Initiates, formulates plans, executes, and coordinates sophisticated research and statistical analysis on sentencing related policy issues using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. (5). Ensures the accuracy and completeness of assigned research studies, including research design, research methods and statistical analysis utilized, as well as data validity and reliability. Interacts with appropriate points of contact (POCs), subject-matter experts (SMEs), and other personnel to investigate unclear, conflicting, incomplete, or invalid data and research findings.

Mandatory Education and Qualification Requirements

Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. or

Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. or

Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition, this position requires Specialized Experience which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.  To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

The work is performed in an office setting, where there is adequate light, heat and ventilation.

James Clark School of Engineering. It offers you the knowledge and analytical skills to understand and assess the complex interactions among science, technology, ethics and policy. 

Students in the minor explore the ways that scientific practice and technological development are embedded in social, cultural, humanistic and political systems. These connections help students see the variety of ways science and technology can be governed, designed and implemented to optimize the needs of society. Job Summary

Security and Counterintelligence is responsible for the protection of NSA/CSS information, people, and facilities worldwide. Overview:

The IDA Summer Associate Program provides students unique opportunity to use their quantitative and analytic skills to work on challenging real-world national security issues. The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) is a not-for-profit corporation that operates Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs).

Two of these FFRDCs are accepting Summer Associates.

Staff at the IDA Systems and Analyses Center (SAC) provide objective analyses of national security issues, particularly those requiring scientific and technical expertise, and conduct related research on other national challenges.  The Systems and Analyses Center, located in Alexandria, Virginia, is comprised of eight research divisions:

• Cost Analysis and Research Division                            • Information Technology and Systems Division

• Intelligence Analyses Division                                        • Joint Advanced Warfighting Division

• Operational Evaluation Division                                     • System Evaluation Division

• Science and Technology Division                                  • Strategy, Forces and Resources Division

Staff at the IDA Science and Technology Policy Institute (STPI), located in Washington, DC, assist the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and other executive branch agencies in formulating federal S&T policy by providing high-quality, objective, analytical support to inform policymakers.

Each year, IDA hires paid student associates at its Virginia and Washington, DC facilities to work for a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer months. Attendance at the 8 week core period between June 6, 2022 and July 29, 2022 is required.  An additional 2 weeks (or more) either before or after the core period is required for a complete 10 week internship. In some cases opportunities exist for associates to work a few weeks longer than the 10-week minimum.  

The wage range is dependent on the field of study and years of education completed. For students living outside the area, IDA pays for one instance of round-trip travel.  Associates are responsible for living expenses during the summer.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities vary depending on division and particular assignment.

Qualifications:

  • We seek highly qualified students with strong academic backgrounds.  Our preference for the program is graduate students, but we will consider undergraduates who are rising seniors.  In either case, students must be returning to an academic institution in the fall to continue their educational pursuits. 
  • SAC seeks a variety of disciplines, including computer science, information technology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, operations research, aero/astronautical engineering, mechanical or electrical engineering, materials science, statistics, economics, as well as social and behavioral sciences, human resources, security, international relations, policy studies, and finance. We are also recruiting students focusing in library and information science, English, history and related.
  • STPI seeks a variety of disciplines, including behavioral sciences, biological sciences, computer science, economics, engineering,environmental sciences, learning sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, and statistics.
  • Applicants are required to submit a resume and transcripts. 
  • Applicants who are selected will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.       
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required.

Volunteer w/ Terps for Change

 

Program Details:

  • Terps for Change is a service-learning organization that allows students to engage in meaningful, longitudinal service with one of our 12 community partners. We hold weekly dialogues that give students the opportunity to explore and reflect on social issues that are impacting our community

  • The experience is free and in-person. With Virtual options if needed.  


Who should participate?:

  • Students who want to engage in weekly service and get involved in the community. 

  • Undergraduate students interested in getting involved in engaging discussions, education and reflection centered around social issues and community service-learning.


How will you benefit from participating?:

  • Connect with other students who have a passion for service-learning.

  • Develop and practice personal and group facilitation skills such as active listening, reflection, critical thinking, and communication. 

  • Learn how to effectively engage in constructive dialogue.

 

What should I expect?:

  • Students will volunteer 1-3 hours a week with one of our local community partners with a group of students

  • Participate in a 1-hour weekly dialogues around social issues.

  • Making connections between social issues and your academic, personal, and professional life.
