DHS Cyber Student Volunteer Initiative

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) just announced the launch of the 2014 Secretary’s Honors Program (SHP) Cyber Student Volunteer Initiative, an unpaid student volunteer program for college students pursuing a program of study in a cybersecurity-related field.  

Through the initiative, more than 100 unpaid student volunteer assignments will be available to support DHS’ cyber mission at local DHS field offices in over 60 locations across the country.  

Created in April 2013 by former Secretary Janet Napolitano, the program has been expanded to new DHS offices and locations, with student volunteer assignments available at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations computer forensics labs, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration, the Office of Intelligence and Analysis, the DHS Office of the Chief Information Officer, and state and major urban area fusion centers.  

Maryland Summer Scholars Program

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to spend the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research or artistic projects. Maryland Summer Scholars research may take place in College Park or anywhere in the US or abroad as required by the nature of the project.  For the summer of 2014, the program will provide awards of $3,000 to approximately 30 outstanding, competitively selected applicants. [Please note: if your proposed research requires travel outside of the College Park area, you may apply for a supplementary travel award of up to $1,000.]

Students who carry out Maryland Summer Scholars projects gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Many Summer Scholars turn their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their junior or senior year.

Gilman Study Abroad Scholarship for Pell Grant Recipients

Are you thinking about studying abroad in Summer 2014, Fall 2014, or for the 2014-15 academic year?  Are you a US citizen receiving a Pell Grant (a federal need-based educational grant)?

Then you should learn about the GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP, which provides up to $5000 for study abroad for students with financial need who receive Pell Grants. In the past two years 70 Maryland students have won Gilman Scholarships!

The Joseph M. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Award

The Joseph M. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Award provides one-time awards of up to $1,000 to undergraduate or graduate students whose ability to succeed at our institution may be challenged by some personal or family circumstance.  Scholarships will be awarded each fall and each spring semester to one or more deserving students.  Applications and nominations for Spring 2014 award are being accepted through January 5, 2014.

Emergency Management Internship Available - Spring 2014

The University of Maryland (UMD) Emergency Management (EM) Program is now accepting applications for Emergency Management Intern positions. The UMD EM program looks to fill 3 positions for the Spring 2014 semester. Interns will assist with program development, trainings and exercises, as well as community outreach and education. Spring 2014 Legal Internship - Trunnell Law Firm

Crofton law firm seeks legal interns for the Spring 2014 semester to assist in the daily operations of the firm and learn about the practice of law.  Interns will have the opportunity to attend court hearings, depositions, and client meetings and gain insight into the practice of law at a litigation firm that is in court on a regular basis. Duties will include collecting evidence, organizing files, communicating with clients and other substantive work. Intern will work under the direct supervision of a personal injury attorney and will learn personal injury litigation from initial intake to trial or settlement. The Intelligence Intern will provide administrative and analytic support for the Analytic Support Unit within the ISC.  The candidate should have comprehensive knowledge of and skills in the practical application of office practices, and procedures.  Must be skilled in the use of computer software including the Microsoft office suite and should be able to organize tasks and work independently.  The candidate must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  This is an unpaid internship/appointment.

Become a PAL: Mentor/Tutor students & Obtain International Certification

Interested in helping your peers, gaining hands-on training and experience, honing communication and leadership skills, and becoming a certified mentor or tutor?

The Peer Assisted Learning Program (PAL) in Learning Assistance Service (LAS) is for YOU!  PALs participate in a comprehensive training and assist fellow students improve study skills, gain confidence in scholastic abilities, and provide tips and techniques for academic success.

PALs have the opportunity to receive official LAS Certification and/or College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA)'s International Mentor Training Program Certification (IMTPC). PALs can receive 1 or 3 upper-level credits.

Honors College Passport Day

This event is open to all students, faculty, and staff. The Honors College and Education Abroad are hosting Passport Day with the U.S. State Department.  You may process an application for a new or renewal passport; have your passport picture taken with our photographer ($10), or just come to hear about abroad opportunities and available scholarships.
