Intern Opportunity at Maryland Pretrial Detention and Services

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Division of Pretrial Detention and Services is seeking an intern for the Fall 2018 semester. The intern will support the Chief of Compliance and Integrity and assist with data collection and management, with regard to pretrial population. No prior knowledge of excel is necessary. This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested in corrections, as we sit in the commissioner's office, right on campus at the Baltimore Pretrial Complex. S/he will also learn about data cleaning and integrity, and how Maryland uses data to make informed decisions for the administration of the pretrial system.

Words of Engagement Intergroup Dialogue (WEIDP) - Fall 2018 Course Offerings

The Words of Engagement Intergroup Dialogue (WEIDP) Program is excited to share our Fall 2018 course offerings. WEIDP courses are 7-week, 1-credit engagements open to all undergraduate students, freshmen through seniors! Dialogues are offered in the first and second half of the semester and count towards the Cultural Competence Diversity Requirement (DVCC).

After a student registers for a dialogue course on Testudo, they work with the WEIDP team to complete a student profile, which facilitates the student's placement in one of the themed sections of their dialogue course. Questions? Please email dialogue@umd.edu.

Justice For Juniors- Currently Seeking Participants

Justice for Juniors is a registered UMD student organization focused on reducing juvenile recidivism through tutoring ethics at the DC Juvenile Jail; organizing faith formation chapel services on Sundays for DC juvenile shelter residents transitioning from the jail to the community at the GW Marvin Center; and planning an annual juvenile justice forum in DC and UMD to address the public policy issues of juvenile justice.  

Justice for Juniors is seeking college students to participate in one or may ways by: 

(1) Tutoring ethics at the DC Juvenile Jail (1000 Mt. Olivet Rd., NE Washington DC) on Mondays 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Transportation is provided; a van leaves UMD on Mondays at 5:15 PM to the jail.

(2) Academic tutorials and college access at UMD on Sundays, 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM for PG County middle and high school students (Parkdale High School) and two local churches

(3) College students may sign up to serve on the Forum Committee.  Chaplain Johnson will assign articles for a specific topic of the forum.  Students will read the articles and design talking points for the panelists. Dr. Nichols and/or Dr. Evita Bynum will serve as the Moderator. Two or three students, preferably seniors, will serve as co-moderators for the experience.

Fall 2018 Internships with START - Application Deadline July 8

START internships are a great way for students to gain professional experience in the counterterrorism/national security field, working alongside our researchers on projects such as domestic radicalization, our Global Terrorism Database, Unconventional Weapons and Technology, Communications, Geospatial Intelligence, International Crisis Behavior, Negotiation and Simulations, etc. Additionally, students can receive academic credit for their work with START.
