Apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds!

These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service learning, and professional or academic conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities like travel/transportation expenses, professional attire, and other opportunity costs (for example: the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship).

Academic Success Guide: Finals Edition

In two weeks, final exams at the University of Maryland will commence for the fall 2018 semester. It has been a trying semester, but it is time to showcase all that you have learned. It is important to study early and often. Studying is a science. Utilize effective, researched strategies and don't forget that studying properly requires planning and dedication. Make a plan now. Preparing early will be one of the best decisions you will make over the next couple of weeks.

Pre-Law Advising Interviews

Pre-Law Advising has scheduled on-campus interviews at the UMD Career Center with law school representatives for the week of December 3-7. These interviews are for students who are applying during this cycle and interested in these specific law schools: UMD; Baltimore; American; Catholic; George Washington; UVA; William & Mary; George Mason; Cardozo; and Fordham. 

The deadline to sign up for these interviews is Thursday, November 29, 2018.

The Police Foundation - Winter RAs needed

The Police Foundation is looking a few undergraduate students to participate in ride alongs with the Prince George's County Police Department. The project will explore the impact of body-worn cameras on victim and witness experiences with PGPD. All ride alongs will take place during shift two (3:30pm-11:30pm) and will require diligent qualitative note taking. 

Interested students should be respectful, independent, self-motivated, and show good judgement. Students who have taken CCJS300 are preferred. Since the ride alongs will take place throughout the county, they are required to have their own mode of transportation.  Students will be paid $15/hour and will run December through January. Research Project Participation Opportunity - $20 Amazon Gift Card

Dr. Fawn Ngo is currently recruiting Asian undergraduate and graduate students (regardless of majors) for a research project titled, “Stalking Victimization and Perpetration among Asian College Students (IRB# Pro00025182).” The purpose of her research is to gather information on the prevalence, incidence, and consequences of stalking victimization and perpetration among Asian college students.

Students who are interested will fill out an online survey questionnaire, which takes about 45 minutes to complete. The information that is provided will be confidential in that they cannot be traced back to the student. As compensation for your time, participating students will receive a gift card from Amazon in the amount of $20.

Salary Negotiation Workshop - Nov 13

The Department of Women’s Studies is sponsoring an AAUW Salary Negotiation Workshop, Tuesday, November 13, 5:15-7:45 pm.  Developed by the American Association of University Women, the Start Smart workshop educates about the gender gap in pay while equipping college women and men to face the job market with the confidence, knowledge, and skills they need to negotiate better salaries and benefits.

Why sign up?  According to research, only 25 percent of students report feeling confident that they can successfully negotiate a good salary and benefits package.  This is especially significant for women negotiating their first salary. After attending a Start Smart workshop, a majority of participants report feeling more confident about in their negotiating ability.

Attendees will gain valuable salary negotiation skills by learning: 
· how the gender wage gap affects their lives
· how to develop a personal budget to determine salary needs
· how to benchmark salary and benefits
· how to negotiate for a salary--especially their first salary out of college

Attendees will be challenged with a series of difficult LSAT questions, and Shannon will demonstrate the most effective methods for tackling them. Internship Opportunity with the Law Enforcement Action Partnership

The Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) is seeking an intern to report directly to the COO, Darby Beck. In the past, internships have led to part-time and full-time jobs, though this is by no means assured and would depend on a variety of factors. Tasks would include internet research, writing bios and talking points, data entry, possible social media or visual design work.

This internship, as with our entire organization, is remote and communication would be primarily via video conference. Because this internship is not in person, this opportunity will not count for CCJS credit.
