Job Fair on February 3, 2020 - Hosted by DC DMV and US Census Bureau

The DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DC DMV), in partnership with the US Census Bureau, is hosting two employment workshops for District residents. At these workshops, residents will participate in job skills mini-clinics and apply for full and part-time employment jobs with the U.S. Census Bureau. Available positions include Recruiting Assistant, Census Field Supervisor, Office Operations Supervisor, Enumerator, and Clerk. Hourly pay rates range between $22.50 and $27.50.

Additionally, each workshop will focus on key interview skills, including how to answer interview questions and interview “do’s and don’ts”. Attendees will also learn important information about employment in public service, and they will have an opportunity to engage with human resource professionals who will assist with the US Census Bureau application process.

Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Walk-ins will not be accepted. Those who plan on attending should RSVP here.

LOSS PREVENTION SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AND SEASONAL POSITIONS
Six Flags America is looking to hire interns from the University of Maryland’s Criminology and Criminal Justice Department. Previous interns have had rewarding experiences, and many of Six Flags' staff members are University of Maryland CCJS alumni who began their career with Six Flags before moving on to state and federal law enforcement agencies. Available Positions:

Excellent opportunity for students who wish to enter into the police force and are most interested in field work, such as surveillance. Students will learn surveillance and investigative techniques. Students will be taught how to conduct field interviews, obtain statements, and write reports. They will also learn how defensive tactics and theft apprehension techniques.

Entry-level experience in analytical and financial auditing for the students most interested in white collar crime. Students will learn how to identify financial impropriety. Students will conduct employee interviews, spot audits, inventory audits, and field audits. The students will be responsible for tracking information learned through investigations and interviews and following up as necessary.

**Positions begin in late May of 2020, those interested in intern positions are also eligible to continue work through Six Flags America’s operating season (May-December).

R. Derek Black was raised in the leading family of the white nationalist movement. His father founded the first online white power community, Stormfront. From an early age, Derek participated in media interviews, gave talks around the country, won public office, and ran a daily radio program in support of his family’s ideology. In college, he was condemned by the campus community of a Florida liberal arts college, and over several years came to engage with anti-racist ideas. He ultimately condemned his family’s ideology in 2013, and has spoken out over the past several years against the reality of white supremacist political activism. He is currently a doctoral student in history at the University of Chicago, researching the medieval and early modern origins of racist hierarchies and ideologies. He is the subject of the recent book by Eli Saslow, Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist (2018).

Camp PALS Volunteers - accepting applications for Summer 2020


PALS Programs, a nonprofit organization that provides one week long summer camp opportunities for teens and young adults with Down syndrome and their peers at 14 college campuses across the country, is currently accepting volunteer applications for Summer 2020 programs.

PALS Programs offers immersive one-week long summer camps for teens and young adults with Down syndrome and their peers. Volunteer counselors are paired one-to-one with a roommate who has Down syndrome for a week of incredible activities and trips. Trips have included a day at the beach, yacht cruises, amusement parks, and more!

PALS provides an opportunity to gain experience with diverse populations, develop genuine friendships, and build leadership skills. This is an invaluable experience to become familiar with the disability community for those interested in law, service, and public policy. Gain real world experience to help change the world from a social justice lens! Check out this video to see why volunteers call PALS the best week of the year!

Jay G. Cohen Memorial Student Opportunities Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Jay G. Cohen Memorial Student Opportunities Endowed Scholarship Fund is a memorial scholarship that honors the memory of Jay G. Cohen, a prominent Baltimore attorney and proud Terp husband and father. This fund was established to reduce the barriers to law school admission for UMD undergraduate students who have both financial need and demonstrated success at the University of Maryland, who have a strong interest in pursuing a career as an attorney. In particular, this fund will provide students with resources to pay for part (or all) of an LSAT preparation course, and/or for additional expenses incidental to the law school admissions process.

The Terp DREAM Scholarship

The Terp DreamScholarship is intended to provide scholarships to undergraduate first-generation college students who have completed at least one semester at the University of Maryland. This scholarship will provide aid to undergraduate students who also have prevalent financial need. Multiple scholarships will be distributed. The monetary award for these scholarships for the 2020-21 academic year will range between $500 - $1,000.

Spring 2020 HIDTA Internship

The High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program has an opening for am analyst internship in the Washington/Baltimore Investigative Support Center, located in Greenbelt, MD. Joseph M. Mitchell Scholarship - Accepting Applications

We are currently accepting applications and nominations for the Joseph M. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Award. Applications and nominations for the 2020-2021 academic year are due March 22, 2020. All University Graduate and Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. 

The scholarship award was established in recognition of Joe Mitchell's compassion for the less fortunate members of our society and in honor of his ability to befriend, guide and mentor individuals whose ability to succeed as students at our institution was challenged by some personal or family circumstances. Disparities in the Criminal Justice System - research experiences for undergraduates!

The criminal justice and criminology departments at the University of North Carolina- Charlotte (UNC-Charlotte) and the University of South Carolina (UofSC) have each been awarded National Science Foundation grants to establish Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) programs. 

University of North Carolina, Charlotte -   REU Site: Crime Analytics
The Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina - Charlotte is seeking applications for its REU Site: Data Science and Crime Analytics. The REU site brings together 9 selected undergraduate students to work with faculty from multiple departments to work on a research team during the 10-week program. Students will conduct research, attend workshops, and receive a stipend ($5,000), travel ($500) and food ($1,000) allowances, and university housing during the 2020 summer program. Berwyn Heights Maryland Police - seeking Spring and Summer 2020 interns!

Berwyn Heights Maryland Police Department is currently seeking interns for the Spring 2020 and Summer 2020 terms. The program requires between 10-20 hours each week from interns, with flexible scheduling to accommodate student schedules. Hours must be completed between 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. This internship will help students learn about the administrative side of a police department, as well as the every day routine of police officers. Students will get an opportunity to shadow the Chief of Police and go on ride-alongs with the Officers.

Montgomery County Police Cadet Program: Application Process is OPEN


The Montgomery County Police Department has just opened the application process for the Police Cadet Position.  This is a great opportunity for students studying criminal justice with interest in law enforcement. Ball Aerospace 2020 Summer Intern Program:
The Ball Aerospace Internship Program is a 10-week summer program that provides interns with practical experience working on relevant projects while working with designated mentors; access to state-of-the-art equipment; a competitive wage; relocation reimbursement; in-house training; group activities; possible future employment and the ability to participate in the Ball Aerospace Remote Sensing Team (BIRST) program to build and launch a rocket or high-altitude balloon.  At the conclusion of your internship, you will be required to prepare and deliver a formal presentation of your project work to your respective department.

What You’ll Do:
  • Assist Ball Aerospace's Physical Security leadership and staff in managing the tactical and strategic activities related to facility and badge access, perimeter monitoring, security training and education and visitor registration for a 24/7 operation across multiple company locations in multiple local law enforcement jurisdictions. 
  • Support Ball Aerospace's security programs to ensure compliance with applicable laws, statutes and regulations.  This includes interfacing with external parties as well as internal colleagues to ensure company directives and policies are adhered to.
  • Prepare security reports, participate in security incident investigations and help to maintain customer audit readiness.
  • This position is not related to cyber security or information security.  It is focused on physical security.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company.  Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
What You’ll Need:
