2022 Spring Youth Justice Initiative Policy Clerk
Position
The National Center for Youth Law is committed to hiring clerks who reflect the racial and cultural diversity of our clients. Students of color, those who will increase the diversity of NCYL, and those with personal experience in our practice areas are strongly encouraged to apply.
NCYL seeks one (1) policy-focused student to support its California-based youth justice advocacy during the Spring 2022 semester. The clerk will work with a highly experienced group of attorneys and policy advocates to uplift the voices of system-impacted youth and families, community leaders, and youth development experts, and advance reforms focused on reducing our state’s reliance on punitive, ineffective practices and expanding community-driven, health-centered approaches to youth justice.
Stipend
Policy clerks will receive a stipend of $520.
Essential Functions
- Research novel issues within youth law and policy
- Analyze and interpret data related to youth systems
- Support legislative policy and/or budget campaigns
- Write policy briefs and other lobbying materials
- Participate in state and local coalitions and provide technical assistance to community partners
Qualifications
- Current graduate or undergraduate student preferred
- Understanding of and commitment to NCYL's mission
- Belief that racism exists
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- 1 year of experience with, or exposure to, at least one of the following: communities of color; low-income communities; and/or child- or youth-centered activities
- Ability to commit at least 10 hours per week for at least 10 weeks
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
