Summer 2023 Research Opportunities in CANADA - for Rising JUNIORS

The Fulbright Canada- Mitacs Globalink internship program that will allow exceptional U.S. undergraduate students to do an internship in Canada during the 2023 summer semester.

This program will provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to be part of a 10 to 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in various academic disciplines, from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.

Mitacs, our partner in this initiative, is a federally funded, national, not-for-profit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for some 20 years. Working with 70 universities, 6,000 companies, and both federal and provincial governments, support industrial and social innovation in Canada. 

Applications will open the first week of August, 2022, and the deadline is September 20, 2022, at 11:59 PM EST.

Program Summary

  • U.S. undergraduate students will come to Canada to undertake advanced research projects.
  • Projects will cover a broad cross-section of research topics, including most academic disciplines.
  • Students will spend 10 to 12 weeks (May-August) in Canada on a research project in their area of interest.
  • Students will be placed at a Canadian university and undertake a supervised research project.
  • Students will have extensive opportunities for cultural, social, and recreational experiences.

Eligibility

Participants in this program must:

  • Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited university located in the United States ;
  • Be a United States citizen, and hold a valid U.S. passport;
  • Have at least one semester remaining in their program of study as of Fall 2023 (this program is not suitable for 1st-year NOR last year students);
  • Have a competitive grade point average;
  • Be available to spend between 10 to 12 weeks in Canada between May and August;
  • Apply by September 20, 2022, at 11:59 PM EST

Ideal candidates will have finished their third year in the year they are doing their internship;

Fall 2022 Amtrak HR Compliance Specialist Internship

Have a desire to learn the internal workings of a Compliance team? As an Intern at Amtrak, you will learn the foundational principles that drive compliance with applicable federal and state laws. You will work under close supervision of the HR Compliance and Risk Management team and in collaboration with key partners in areas such as: Law, HR Operations, Drug & Alcohol, and Payroll.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Individuals in this role use strong communication, time management and critical thinking skills to: 

  • Research legal requirements of various HR laws
  • Perform audits and compliance reviews of Amtrak HR policies and procedures
  • Assist in the review and development of desktop procedures and job aids
  • Coordinate tasks in support of small projects 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution
  • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Business Management, Criminal Justice, Political Science, Human Resources or related field
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong MS Excel experience (including V Lookup, Pivots, Dashboards)
  • Some administrative experience in an office setting.  
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 15-20 hours per week between Monday-Friday 8AM-5PM

Fall 2022 Criminal Investigator Internship - Major Crimes Unit (Bilingual – English/Spanish speakers highly preferred)

Who Are We? 

The Indigent Defense Commission (IDC) is a State Agency which represents indigent people charged with  criminal offenses throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The IDC has numerous offices throughout the  state and they are comprised of state attorneys, mitigation specialists, administrative staff and investigative  divisions. Our division works on Fairfax County criminal cases and is located at the Fairfax County Public  Defender’s Office (4103 Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA).  

What Do Investigators Do? 

Investigative major crimes 

o Interview clients and witnesses (in jail, the office, or in private homes) 

o Conduct research, review evidence and retrieve records 

o Write detailed investigative reports 

o Attend court proceedings  

o Assist in any additional trial preparation tasks 

Investigators assist the state attorneys by gathering facts and evidence that will help them resolve cases.  Interns will assist investigators with their caseload, which consists of serious felony cases, including  murder, sex crimes, robbery, assault, etc. 

Why Might You Be a Good Fit for the Investigator Internship? 

You have an interest in, and some familiarity with, the Criminal Justice System (through  coursework or other practical experience) 

You are comfortable with conducting field work that brings you out into the community and into people’s homes 

You are proficient in Spanish, or another foreign language (Bilingual - Spanish speakers highly  preferred) 

You are a good communicator and will maintain professionalism even when interacting with rude or difficult people 

You have a positive and willing attitude  

This is an actual hands-on professional work experience, unlike most internships! (Non-paid Internship - Covid-19 safety procedures in place for all Interns)
