Alternative Breaks Dialogue Program


Do you want to connect with your peers? Learn about social issues? Do direct service? Join us for the Spring 2021 Alternative Breaks Dialogue Program!

Program Details:

  • The Alternative Breaks Dialogue Program looks to build a world in which UMD students are empowered learners in community together, taking action toward just causes.
  • Through deliberative and reflective dialogues addressing global social issues, student participants will exchange and evaluate different ideas and approaches that challenge specific social, political and economic structures of our global community. 
  • Direct service with a local community partner will demonstrate how students can turn their knowledge into action in safe, responsible, and sustainable ways.
  • Interested students must be willing to commit 1.5 hours/week for 8 weeks between February 15th, 2021 - April 9th, 2021
  • The experience is free.

Who should participate?:

  • Any student that wants to explore community development, civic engagement, local issues, leadership, and service.
  • Undergraduate and graduate students interested in exploring social issues that include environmental conservations, education, socioeconomic inequality, healthcare, and more. 

How will you benefit from participating?:

  • Connect with a community of peers from across campus  and create new friendships. 
  • Develop and practice personal and group leadership skills such as active listening, reflection, critical thinking, and communication. 
  • Learn how to effectively engage in constructive dialogue

What should I expect?

  • Active engagement in personal reflection, listening, small group dialogue, and small group activities.
  • Thought-provoking questions and dialogue around social issues.
  • Making connections between social issues and your academic, personal, professional, or civic life.
  • Engaging in direct service alongside a local community partner. 
  • Identifying at least one action step to take towards a social issue you are passionate about.

Applications open for Jewish Service Corps

Applications are now open for the Avodah Jewish Service Corps, a year long program for individuals ages 21-26 to build a lifetime of leadership skills, an active Jewish community, a powerful professional network, and a more just America.


Spend a year serving for justice at a leading anti-poverty organization while living and learning at the crossroads of justice and Jewish life. As a member of the Jewish Services Corps, you will:


  • Build real-world expertise with critical, hands-on work experience. You’ll be placed with one of Avodah’s partner organizations in Chicago, New Orleans, New York, or Washington, DC,  Through on-the-ground direct service work, you'll contribute meaningfully to our partners’ work on crucial justice issues such as immigration, hunger, education, public health, domestic violence, and much more.

  • Develop activist skills and Jewish social justice insights. Avodah’s trusted, innovative curriculum examines the causes and effects of domestic poverty, develops practical skills, and looks at justice work with a Jewish lens. Programming will deepen, contextualize, and nourish your day-to-day work while preparing you to stay in social and economic justice movements for the long haul.

  • Live and learn in the dynamic Avodah community. Home-cooked meals, late night conversations, and holiday celebrations make living communally in the bayit (house) memorable and meaningful.

  • Access activism, professional development, and Jewish opportunities for life. Over a thousand social justice leaders across the country serve as active, engaged members of our alumni community.  They’ll help you with everything from apartment hunts to job references to holiday meals invites.


Our priority deadline is January 23rd, 2021 and the following deadline is February 20. In addition to a year of professional and personal growth, Corps Members receive a monthly living stipend, health insurance, travel allowance, and subsidized housing. The program will run August 2021 - August 2022.

C-BERC sponsored talk by forensic auditor

The Center for the Study of Business Ethics, Regulation & Crime is pleased to present David Malamed, the Head of Forensic Accounting and Chief Fraud Investigator at Cooper, Green & Warren LLP, as he talks about The Key Components for Fraud Prevention and Early Detection.

Businesses, whether public, private, government or not for profits, are highly susceptible to fraud. Having critical controls in place and making sure they work reduces exposure for the company’s business, employees, vendors, investors and customers. Fraud prevention and early detection are two foundational musts to protect any business from losses, leading to bankruptcy, liability, and harmful business reputation exposure. David Malamed will use real case examples and key methods to prevent fraud from occurring, provide early detection techniques, and explain recovery sources in the event of a loss. The talk will cover:

 

  • Fraud awareness training

  • Why a whistleblower program is your number one fraud detection control

  • Employee monitoring

  • Common red flags of fraud

  • Sources for recovery

 

In addition to his role as the Head of Forensic Accounting and Chief Fraud Investigator at Cooper, Green & Warren LLP, David is a court qualified forensic accounting and fraud investigation expert specializing in fraud investigations and underlying damage quantification. 

 

He has investigated, managed and reported on countless fraud allegations used in both civil and criminal court. He has been qualified numerous times in court as an expert in his field and provided testimony. David conducts and manages investigations on behalf of corporations, law firms, individuals, governments, law enforcement agencies and other public sector organizations.
