Internships with the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division

Interested in civil rights laws? The Federal Coordination and Compliance Section of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice has full and part-time volunteer internship opportunities available for the fall, spring, and summer semesters.  The Federal Coordination and Compliance Section hires on a rolling basis and invites all interested students to apply for a spring internship (applications accepted June 30 - Nov1), a summer internship (applications accepted between Dec 1 - March 1), or a fall internship (applications accepted March 1 - June 30).

Join the Petey Greene Program - 1st General Body Meeting 10/29

Are you a student interested in
exploring the intersections of education and mass incarceration? The Petey Greene Program at UMD may be for you! Nationally, our mission is to “support the academic goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through high-quality volunteer tutoring programs, while educating volunteers on the injustice manifest in our carceral system.

We recognize how COVID-19 has impacted our tutoring services and as a chapter we are using this opportunity to engage and educate the campus on community issues surrounding the carceral system through general body meetings, movie/podcasts discussions, panels, and more! Attend our GBM to learn more about the projects and initiatives we are working on. General body meetings will be held on Thursdays, bi-weekly from 6-7pm EST. Our first GBM will be Thursday, October 29th from 6-7pm EST

Criminal Law Internship w/ DC Public Defender Service

 


The Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2021 Criminal Law Internship Program (CLIP). 

The Criminal Law Internship Program (CLIP) at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia (PDS) provides undergraduate and graduate students with the fundamental investigative techniques and the relevant criminal law knowledge needed to assist Staff Attorneys. The Internship kicks-off with an intensive weeklong training session that orients interns to PDS and the city. In the second week, Investigative Interns are partnered together, assigned to one or more Staff Attorneys and are responsible for all investigative aspects of their attorneys’ cases. Investigative Interns will be assigned to Staff Attorneys in the Trial Division, but some also investigate for the Parole Division, Community Defender Division and Special Litigation Division.

Taylor Henderson, GVPT '18 | Law Student, Villanova Law:  July 2016, I began my internship as a Program Support Trainee with the United States Department of Justice, Criminal Division, Office of Information and Technology Management. As a Program Support Trainee, my main responsibility was to coordinate language services requests for the division. Throughout my time with the Criminal Division, I had the opportunity to work on cybersecurity policies and serve on the selection committee for the new language services contract. Once I graduated, I transferred to the Environment and Natural Resources Division of DOJ, where I served as a legal assistant. A few months into my position, I decided that I wanted to attend law school and began to study for the LSAT. Currently, I am a student at Villanova Law. Intern for a Day has historically connected undergraduate UMD students with alumni, parents, and employers for in-person job shadowing experiences to explore potential career fields.

Students Must Complete a 20-Minute Online Orientation for Application Access.

Students have access to the asynchronous orientation in ELMS beginning next week.  The orientation will cover informational interviewing best practices and more details about the Intern for a Day Lite program.

Students who complete the orientation and all of its associated activities will receive the application via their UMD email address on Monday, October 12.

ACES Minor-Applications are OPEN

The ACES Minor has opened applications for the Spring 2021 semester! 

The ACES Minor is a 16-credit academic minor open to students of all majors. Students gain practical skills in cybersecurity through technical and non-technical coursework, group projects, internships and research opportunities. 


This curriculum is bolstered by regular interactions with cybersecurity industry leaders both in the private and public sector who serve as mentors and professional networks for ACES Minor students.


The ACES Minor is also an Upper Level Concentration for Computer Science students! Students can submit the application via the ACES website at aces.umd.edu. Applications are due October 30, 2020.
