Main Purpose of the Job:

The Appeals Clerk is responsible for case initiation for criminal and juvenile appeals, including opening case records in MDEC; receiving, reviewing, and storing physical files; and sending out appropriate notices and orders according to standing business processes. Other duties are to assist patrons by telephone and in person and serve as a backup to the Civil Appeals Clerk when required.

Education: High School diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience: Two (2) years of work experience, to include one (1) year in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Note:

A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures.

Knowledge of office practices and procedures.

Knowledge of business English, including proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Skill in using office productivity software to monitor workflow.

Ability to balance multiple conflicting priorities.

Ability to communicate case information to other court personnel, attorneys, and self-represented parties.

Ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing and via telephone.
