Additional Information

Work Hours: 
Work schedule is dependent on class schedule and will be determined at time of hire. Work is performed as part of 24 /7 operation and the worker must be able to work shifts, including after-hours and during emergency situations as necessary, in-person. A reliable means of transportation to Arlington County to perform job related duties is required! Cadets may work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic semester.

Selection Process:
There is a multi-stage selection process to determine applicant eligibility to become an Arlington County Police Cadet. A candidate must pass each stage of the selection process to be considered eligible for hire. These stages include:
  • Screening for minimum qualifications;
  • Character/background investigation;
  • Panel interview;
  • Polygraph examination;
  • Drug testing; and
  • Medical examination.

Additionally, the position is responsible for assisting law enforcement and prosecutors in support of their investigations and prosecutions of CSAM offenses.


Reports reviewed by CVIP contain graphic pornographic content or links to pornographic content online. This content may depict minors and/or adults. Child sexual abuse material (CSAM) includes images, videos and text describing child sexual exploitation. This position requires an employee that can handle exposure to sensitive content as well as demonstrate a high level of accuracy and thoroughness in their work product.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Learn and demonstrate a strong familiarity with child sexual abuse material series
  • Conduct efforts through image and video analysis to identify unknown victims featured in child sexual abuse material
  • Provide case-specific technical assistance to law enforcement and prosecutors in child sexual abuse material cases
  • Review copies of child sexual abuse material and select files containing “identified” children such as pornography involving child victims who have been identified by law enforcement
  • Produce and maintain “Child Identifications Reports” to requesting agencies detailing those image/video files accepted in a court of law as “non-virtual” child sexual abuse material

An Overview

Description:
This special topics course explores some of the more pressing and contested issues in crime, law, and justice today. Through a structured, theoretically driven, interdisciplinary, and evidence-based approach, students will critically examine five major questions in criminology and public discourse.

Special topics courses at the University of Maryland are designed to offer innovative and timely content, often addressing emerging debates or policy challenges not fully covered in the standard curriculum. This course reflects that intent by pairing foundational criminological theory with current research, interdisciplinary insight, and real-world policy dilemmas. Students will engage deeply through lectures, structured discussions and debates, experiential simulations, and collaborative presentations.
The course emphasizes not only what we know from theory and empirical research, but also how this knowledge can be used to evaluate current practices and envision better approaches for the future.

This position is located in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Homeland Security Bureau, Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), Research and Analytical Services Branch (RASB).

The Crime Analyst is responsible for analyzing, visualizing, and mapping crime data from MPD and other public safety sources including MPD’s Records Management System (RMS) and OUC’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) to support command staff with crime trends awareness, deployment and tactical decision making. The Crime Analyst also combines quantitative and qualitative research methods to develop strategic reports on themes self-initiated or assigned.

The analyst follows established procedures and produces deliverables in a timely fashion with minimal error; incrementally improves procedures and deliverable design; produces a significant volume of self-initiated work; and builds a trusted partner relationship with command staff.

This Crime Analyst position is covered under the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) bargaining unit and you may be required to pay an agency fee through direct payroll deductions.

This incumbent will be responsible for the following:
  • Develops statistical summary reports, graphs, charts, and maps covering crime trends and patterns within specified time frames and geographic boundaries (e.g. neighborhood, District, PSA, Ward, and Citywide), some of which are updated on a periodic basis (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, seasonally, and annually) for officials within the Department.
  • Applies advanced mapping techniques to provide research and analysis at any level of geography and depicts observations including change in crime rates and characteristics over time.
  • Constructs presentations and dashboards that include computer-aided visualizations from software products such as ESRI ArcGIS Map, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Tableau, etc.
  • Conducts increasingly complex statistical modeling of police data to develop insights on crime trends, crime projections, and supporting information necessary for effective presentation.
  • Recommends design and process improvements for the team’s analytical products and deliverables.
  • Provides analysis that assists in the deployment of manpower and the initiation and evaluation of tactical responses to high crime areas.
  • Provides analysis that assists in preparing necessary materials and delivers presentations of current crime trends and patterns for command staff meetings.
  • Provides analysis that assists in preparation for community meetings and the promotion of community problem solving.
  • Prepares detailed factual, analytical, and narrative reports which include times, dates, location and other detailed information related to criminal activities and other areas being researched.
  • Reviews and analyzes suspect information and criminal history for internal Metropolitan Police Department support units, including but not limited to specialty and investigative units.

Arlington County's Juvenile and Domestic Relations (JDR) is seeking a Bilingual Adult Probation Counselor (English/Spanish) to join the Adult Probation Unit of the Court Services Unit. This position will be responsible for providing clients with court-ordered probation and supportive services, completing pre-sentence investigations and reports, developing supervision plans, preparing and maintaining reports and records, and providing verbal and written reports to the Court. The position will also assist in the management of a specialized program providing services to probation clients and their families.

The Adult Probation Unit provides services for adult offenders to encourage family stability and to protect the community through conducting presentence investigations, supervising defendants and coordinating effective and efficient interventions and services. These services are provided to a racially and ethnically diverse population, of whom many speak Spanish and may have limited English-speaking skills.


Responsibilities
Specific duties include:

  • Counseling clients and family members to support their engagement in needed services;

Purpose of the Job
The Legal Services Coordinator will support the work of Human Rights First’s Refugee Representation team. The Legal Services Coordinator will work closely with our asylum-seeking clients, and in-house and volunteer attorneys during the clients’ immigration cases. The Legal Services Coordinator will coordinate and conduct initial screenings and interviews with refugees seeking legal representation; handle the administrative details of our asylum legal representation work, including scheduling and case management; and assist with outreach and advocacy goals related to asylum and refugee protection.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Assist in responding to inquiries and requests for assistance from asylum seekers, including scheduling, coordinating, and conducting initial screening interviews;
  • Perform in-depth, detailed interviews with potential clients, who are often victims of torture and human rights abuses, to ascertain their eligibility for asylum and representation through our program; and conduct related country conditions research;

  • Contact volunteer attorneys and clients to obtain updates on cases; coordinate the case closure process; and serve as liaison among volunteer attorneys, clients, and in-house Refugee Representation team staff;

  • Assist in managing the Refugee Representation team’s administrative/clerical needs:

Work Interactions
