The position is located in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Technical & Analytical Services Bureau (TASB), Records Division. The Records Division maintains and provides police records and background checks to the public, local government agencies, and the criminal justice community. The incumbent of this position examines and reviews application information submitted for firearms registration, concealed carry, criminal history requests and qualified law enforcement officers under the Law Enforcement Officers Act (LEOSA) to ensure the required documents are complete to proceed processing).

This Criminal Background Examiner position is covered under the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) bargaining unit and you may be required to pay an agency fee through direct payroll deductions.

The incumbent will be responsible for the following:
  • Serves as the initial intake representative for the Records Division, the incumbent is responsible for efficient management of customer service through in-person requests, telephone calls, voicemail, email, and regular mail.
  • Listens attentively and uses language appropriate to customers.
  • Provides proper procedure, requirements and documentation to initiate service that may include a travel visa, international adoption, criminal history, public documents or applications for firearms registration and licenses to carry a concealed weapon.
  • Assesses and ensures accuracy for all documentation submitted for review.
  • Assists customers with payment kiosk machine; collects appropriate payment receipts and process applications for refunds.
  • Provides supervisory officials with Criminal History Identity Summary results.
  • Maintains files, logbooks, email inboxes and databases pertaining to division activity.
  • Files electronic and hard copy documents for safe record keeping and retrieves files and documents as needed.
  • Responsible for purging and destroying materials and documents in accordance with the retention guidelines.
  • Responsible for the setup, maintenance, and operation of digital camera and identification card printer.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all information.
  • Provides on-the-job instruction to new or less experienced professional staff or sworn personnel.
