The ACLU seeks an intern in National Political Advocacy Department’s Democracy Division within the ACLU’s National office (remote).
The National Political Advocacy Department (NPAD) works to strengthen the efforts of the ACLU at the federal, state, and local levels of government. The department harnesses the political power that comes from having more than eight million members and supporters, as well as affiliates in every state. By organizing grassroots lobbying and issue campaigns using modern tactics, the ACLU seeks to achieve change as profound in the legislative, administrative and electoral arenas as it has accomplished through the courts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct research, analysis and developing theories to support new campaign projects - 1st Amendment, Surveillance, Privacy and Technology (SPT) and Consumer Privacy issues
- Track, analyze and report on proposed legislation
- Assist campaign strategists in developing persuasive and informative outreach materials, including fact sheets, talking points, and campaign plans.
- Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned
- Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes
- Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance
- Develop legislative impact analysis reports for priority speech, privacy, and technology bills to help Policy Counsel and Strategists extrapolate viability scores for the 2024 legislation session.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Can be a current undergraduate, graduate or law student, with at least 1 year completed
- Must possess excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills
- Preference for individuals with demonstrated interest in voting rights
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced environment
- Commitment to civil liberties, civil rights and social justice, as well as the ACLU’s mission
- Location: Due to COVID-19 our offices are currently operating in reduced capacities. We plan to launch an Internship Program that offers a limited number of remote or hybrid intern positions. This internship has been identified as a fully remote opportunity.
- Time Commitment: This summer internship requires a full-time commitment of 35 hours per week.
- Internship Duration: Summer internships extend for a 10-week period and begin either May 30 or June 12, 2023.
- Stipend: A stipend is available for those students who do not receive course credit and are lawfully authorized to work. Students who receive outside funding are eligible for a partial stipend to bring their total funding up to the level of ACLU’s stipend amount for that term, if applicable. Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit. Below is the stipend breakdown by term:
- The hourly rate is $18.57 for undergraduate students or equivalent experience and $21.42 for graduate, law, and PhD students or equivalent experience.
