2024 Job Description & Responsibilities

Program Description
Summer Discovery is a 3-week, residential program for incoming, first-year IAP students to be introduced to various elements of college and the campus before the start of the fall semester. Students are immersed in college life, where they will enhance their academic, social, and leadership skills. Students will take a 3-credit leadership course, benefit from relevant workshops, live with their peers, participate in community-building activities, and become familiar with the campus resources.

Position Description and Responsibilities: 
Discovery Leaders serve as anchors to help connect new scholars to the Incentive Awards Program and to the University of Maryland. They are an essential part of introducing new scholars to college life and modeling the habits, behaviors and discipline of a successful student. Under the guidance of the Coordinator of Student Services, Discovery Leaders’ duties include, but are not limited to: 
  • Attend mandatory training on Friday July 5th - Saturday July 6th and all Discovery Leader team meetings
  • Live-on campus from July 5, 2024 - July 26, 2024 
  • Assist with student move-in (July 7) and move-out (July 26)
  • Help plan and implement all evening and weekend activities 
  • Set up and attend all activities, events and workshops
  • Supervise IAP students in the residence hall and report any residence hall issues to the Conferences & Visitor Services (C&VS) staff
  • Join students for meals in the dining hall during the week 
  • Supervise structured study hall time both in the residence hall and in classrooms
  • Teach first-year students study techniques and how to navigate college classes
  • Introduce new students to key academic, support and student services on campus (e.g., OMSE, CMSE, Testudo, ELMS) 
  • Provide general support and mentorship to students
  • Model exemplary behavior in accordance with University of Maryland and IAP policies, guidelines and expectations
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Compensation:
Discovery Leaders receive a room, meal plan, and stipend of $2,500. Leaders must be available from July 5 - 26, 2024, with July 5-6 designated for leader training. Leaders will be expected to work at least 25 hours per week.
