Announcing the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Would you like to earn $6,000 this summer to conduct research, develop data skills, and build your resume? Are you interested in presenting your work at a national criminal justice conference?
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a Research Experience for Undergraduates Program in Data Science and Crime Analytics to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. This NSF summer program is designed for undergraduate students who want “hands-on” research experience and for those who are interested in pursuing graduate degrees or careers in fields such as Computer Science, Criminal Justice, Crime Analysis, Analytics, and Data Science. The program is targeted to undergraduate students who are rising sophomores and juniors. Nine students will be selected to participate, and students from underrepresented groups, HBCUs, and community colleges are strongly encouraged to apply.
Students will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty from Charlotte’s Departments of Criminal Justice & Criminology, Geography & Earth Science, College of Computing and Informatics, and the School of Data Science. The REU faculty members are nationally recognized for their expertise in working with large data sets, data mining and manipulation, quantitative data analysis, and data visualization.
Student teams will work with faculty mentors in their research track for 40 hours per week to complete one or more projects during the summer experience. In some cases, students may work with a local criminal justice agency as part of their project. Students
will present their research at a final luncheon, and could potentially submit a manuscript for publication.
Students will be paid a $6,000 stipend, and will have their housing provided on campus, as well as an allowance for food. Students will also visit industry leaders in data technology and the CMPD Crime Analysis lab, and participate in social events.
