Criminal Law Internship w/ DC Public Defender Service

The Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2021 Criminal Law Internship Program (CLIP). 

The Criminal Law Internship Program (CLIP) at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia (PDS) provides undergraduate and graduate students with the fundamental investigative techniques and the relevant criminal law knowledge needed to assist Staff Attorneys. The Internship kicks-off with an intensive weeklong training session that orients interns to PDS and the city. In the second week, Investigative Interns are partnered together, assigned to one or more Staff Attorneys and are responsible for all investigative aspects of their attorneys’ cases. Investigative Interns will be assigned to Staff Attorneys in the Trial Division, but some also investigate for the Parole Division, Community Defender Division and Special Litigation Division.

Apply to be a Spring 2021 BSOS Student Commencement Speaker!

As you prepare to embark on your next journey after graduating from the University of Maryland, what reflections would you share with your fellow graduates?

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences will select two students, one undergraduate and one graduate student, to deliver a 3-minute speech at a commencement event.  The theme of the speech is entirely up to you, but must speak to all graduates from the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. 

 

Eligibility

  • A GPA of 3.50 or better

  • Graduated in Winter or cleared for Spring 2021 graduation

  • Undergraduate candidates must have completed at least 60 credits at the University of Maryland, College Park

Summer 2021 internship w/ NCVBA

The National Center for Victims of Crime is seeking an unpaid Program Assistant intern to help with their National Crime Victim Bar Association (NCVBA), the legal arm of the organization. The NCVBA connects victims of crime to lawyers across the nation, and provides ongoing technical litigation support and trainings on how victim advocates can better use the civil justice system to help victims of crime.

The intern reports to the Director of the National Crime Victim Bar Association (NCVBA, an affiliate of the National Center). The NCVBA provides technical support to attorneys representing crime victims in civil actions, refers crime victims to lawyers in their local area, and works to increase general awareness about the availability of civil remedies for victims of crime.  This internship provides an opportunity to build your resume with while learning how a non-profit organization that works with those in need operates from the inside.

Summer 2021: Arlington County Police Department Investigative Assistant Internship

The Arlington County Police Department Investigative Assistant Internship is currently accepting applications for exceptional undergraduate students interns. This position is located in the Criminal Investigations Division: Homicide/Robbery Unit. The purpose of the Investigative Assistant Intern is to provide direct assistance to the detectives in the Homicide/Robbery Unit, Burglary/Larceny Unit, Special Victims Unit and the General Assignment Unit.

  • Interns will be directly involved interviewing victims and witnesses in a variety of cases such as assaults, threats, missing persons, domestic assaults, larcenies and other property crimes
  • Interns will be provided with orientation and guidance on how to conduct these interviews and work on each case with the assigned detective
  • This internship will acquaint the student with the investigative process by actually being a part of the investigations
  • Interns will conduct interviews, document statements and provide input to the detectives on disposition of cases
  • An intern’s work may lead to identifying suspects to be prosecuted

Interns accepted for this assignment will complete the process with true investigative experience. The intern will develop strategies and make recommendations to the Detective and the intern will work closely with the Detectives throughout the investigative process. The Detectives will involve the intern in all phases of the investigation and treat them as colleagues.

Applicants must be enrolled in a program that will continue to December 2021 in order to participate in the summer semester internship. The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to participate in the Research for Intelligence & Security Challenges (RISC) Initiative and internship program. This exciting 10-week paid program will pair students with mentors from UMD campus and the Department of Defense (DOD) and Intelligence Community (IC) community, and offer the potential opportunity to be considered for future employment with the US government, to include possible sponsorship for a security clearance.

Students will be introduced to career opportunities with the DoD and IC as well as develop their technical capabilities through hands-on real world problems. Project topics will be posed by government operators, and supported with realistic data sets and other materials. Over the 10-week period, students will participate in lectures and regular team development meetings in a shared virtual work environment. The summer program will conclude with a demonstration event and workshop, with a panel of visiting experts from DOD/IC to discuss the results.

Eligibility: We seek outstanding graduate and senior undergraduate students with expertise in disciplines listed below. Students must be U.S. citizens and be available full-time for the duration of the program. Selection criteria emphasize technical strengths in relevant fields, experience working both independently and in teams, and demonstrated interest in contributing to national security.

While specific topics are in development, the missions supported are likely to include geospatial analysis, human geography, disinformation, insider risk, and critical technology protection. The RISC Initiative is particularly seeking interns with expertise in one or more of the following disciplines:

  1. Computer Science, Information Science & Engineering: AI/ML algorithmic development, HCI, data science, data and knowledge engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, media analysis and forensics, information systems design, GIS;
  2. Mathematics and Statistics: Data analytics, quantitative modeling, experimental design, graph analytics, data visualization;
  3. Social & Behavioral Sciences: anthropology, human geography (e.g., pattern of life and mobility modeling), cognitive/neuroscience & psychology, criminal justice, teamwork and group dynamics, communications, disinformation and misinformation;
  4. Library Science: Data curation, tagging, metadata, repositories, social media analytics;
  5. Additional topics may include: Measurement and evaluation of learning outcomes, environmental modeling and remote sensing, human factors, regulatory public policy.

Remuneration: Interns will be paid a weekly stipend up to $1,000, commensurate with education and experience. Housing accommodations, transportation, and food allowances are not provided.

Crime Subcommittee Internship w/ House Judiciary Committee

The House Judiciary Committee Democratic staff are looking for an intern to work with the Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security subcommittee. The House Committee on the Judiciary’s staff internship program offers undergraduate students, law students, graduate students, and recent graduates an opportunity to experience the operation of a congressional committee firsthand and learn about the important role that the Committee plays in the legislative process. The Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security has jurisdiction over the Federal Criminal Code, drug enforcement, sentencing, parole and pardons, internal and homeland security, the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, prisons, and criminal law enforcement. 

Intern assignments will vary depending on the work of the Judiciary Committee each semester. Examples of potential responsibilities include: 

  • Researching policy issues under the committee’s jurisdiction
  • Conducting legal research
  • Attending briefings and hearings on the Hill 
  • Drafting memos
  • Supporting committee counsels
  • Supporting committee clerks and professional staff members
  • Providing administrative support, including answering calls, delivering correspondence, and setting up the hearing room.

Crime Scene Investigator position open w/ City of Hyattsville

The City of Hyattsville is looking to hire a Crime Scene Investigator. This civilian position is assigned to the Police Department Criminal Investigations Section and is responsible for the maintenance, storage, security and chain of custody for all property and evidence. This includes property seized as evidence to be used in criminal prosecution and/or laboratory analysis, lost, abandoned, or recovered property held for safe keeping. The incumbent is responsible for regular audits and disposal of property in accordance with City, State and Federal guidelines. The position also serves as the crime scene investigator and is responsible for processing crime scenes to include fingerprinting, photographing, sketching, and using evidence collection procedures and equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for testifying in court proceedings and other duties as assigned. The incumbent will be responsible for adherence to all CALEA standards related to property and evidence.

Summer 2021 Reshaping Prosecution Internship w/ Vera Institute of Justice

The Vera Institute of Justice is looking for an intern to participate in their Reshaping Prosecution Program. The Reshaping Prosecution Program is dedicated to transforming what it means to be a prosecutor through profound commitment to the dignity of all people impacted by the criminal legal system.

The Reshaping Prosecution intern will assist with the team’s communications and programmatic work including:

  • Drafting written content for newsletters, guides, memos, talking points, etc. about prosecutors’ role in addressing racial disparities;
  • Expanding and supporting our network of partners in their racial equity-focused reforms; and
  • Keeping the team up to date on the latest news, literature, trends, and elections impacting prosecution reform.

In addition to your work with the Reshaping Prosecution team, you will have the opportunity to apply some of the skills you’ve acquired in school as well as learn from our amazing staff across the organization. You will have extensive opportunities for personal and professional development and you’ll:

  • Attend brown bags to enhance your understanding of criminal legal reform

Research Survey for Undergraduate Students

Students are welcome to participate in a 15-20 minute survey measuring attitudes regarding police, Black Lives Matter, and social media usage. If you choose to participate in this survey, you may opt into a lottery for five $10 cash rewards. Additionally, you may opt in to be selected for an experiment that will also include compensation. This research attempts to understand attitudes towards police and the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of the protests in support of Black Lives Matter this summer.

NSF Research Opportunity at Wayne State University


The Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Wayne State University was awarded a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) grant from the National Science Foundation (final approval/funding pending). Undergraduates who are currently sophomores or juniors and interested in gaining meaningful research experience with the goal of attending graduate school are welcome to apply.

The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in the study of Communities, Crime, & Criminal Justice in Detroit (C3JD) is an intensive 8-week online (via Zoom) summer research program (June 7, 2021 to August 2, 2021) that will connect 9 undergraduate students with faculty and graduate students from the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Wayne State University in research examining crime and justice in Detroit, Michigan.

University of South Florida Summer Research Institute

The Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) at the University of South Florida is inviting undergraduate students interested in substance use and co-occurring disorders to apply for a highly selective Summer Research Institute (SRI) funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). This program is designed for students interested in building their research skills within the context of substance use and co-occurring disorders to prepare for a Senior Thesis and/or graduate school. The SRI@FMHI is an 11-week hybrid program taking place from May 27 to August 5, 2021. Remote Learning will take place: May 27,2021 to June 25, 2021 and In-Person Instruction will take place: June 26, 2021 to August 5, 2021.

Summer 2021 Security Operations Internship w/ Tesla

Tesla is currently seeking a full-time intern for their Summer 2021 Security Operations Internship. This is a paid, in-person opportunity. The internship will take place in Sparks, NV.

The Security Operations intern will be provided with opportunities across a number of areas within the Security Operations team at Gigafactory Nevada (GFNV). These areas include, security operations, security systems training, corporate security compliance, De-escalation of force , security awareness, and security best practices and standards. Under general supervision, the individual will work with our Security Operations Site Supervisor to support in Corporate Security Compliance. The Intern will receive the opportunity to build professional relationships, enhance interpersonal skills, and gain on-the-job training and mentorship through handling real time security incidents. The Security Operations intern will handle a variety of duties within these areas.

Maryland General Assembly Internship Program: Applications now open for 2021-2022

Consider applying for the Maryland General Assembly (MGA) Internship Program!  The MGA internship program is a two-semester course open only to students who have earned superior academic records and who have demonstrated effective writing skills.  

Many program alums have stated the MGA program offers the best internship opportunity at UMD. Interns serve at the MGA for 16-20 hours per week during the spring legislative session (January-April 2022). Their assignments develop invaluable professional skills. In previous sessions, interns researched proposed legislation, responded to constituent mail, organized news conferences, and wrote and delivered testimony. The internship (ENGL388M/HONR379W) conveys six credits.

In the preceding fall semester, students will take a three credit course (ENGL381/HONR368A) which teaches students the skills that the internship will require. In addition, students learn about the MGA and Maryland state politics.

Scholarship Opportunity for CCJS Majors

The Criminology and Criminal Justice Department is pleased to offer the J. Edgar Hoover Foundation Leadership Scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Multiple scholarships ($1,200 each) will be awarded to high achieving CCJS rising juniors and seniors. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of demonstrated strength in CCJS coursework, merit, and leadership ability.  Preference will be given to students who have an interest in and are eligible for law enforcement careers

Applicants for the J. Edgar Hoover Foundation Leadership Scholarship must meet the following criteria:
  • Declared as a CCJS major
  • Rising junior, or senior standing for the 2021-2022 academic year
  • Will register as a full-time student for the Fall 2021 semester and in good academic standing
  • Minimum GPA of 3.3 for all colleges/universities attended
  • Minimum 12 credits completed at the University of Maryland
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities
  • U.S. Citizen
Applicants must submit all of the following materials:
  1. Transcript(s) (unofficial is fine) showing all college/university coursework - Students cumulative GPA from the University of Maryland will be considered
  2. Resume (1-2 pages) - please include expected graduation date
  3. Short Bio (250 word or less)  – include year of study, major, other activities relevant to scholarship and professional activities
  4. Short essay (1-2 pages) specifying career and academic goals

Summer 2021 Investigative Analyst Internship w/ C4ADS

C4ADS is currently accepting applications for their Summer 2021 Investigative Analyst Internship. This internship will be held remotely and students may receive a stipend.

As an Investigative Analyst Intern, students will conduct in-depth research on transnational illicit networks and conflicts. Interns will work with a supervising analyst on a project in one of five analytical cells: Environmental Crimes Fusion Cell, Organized Crime and Grand Corruption, Conflict Finance and Irregular Threats, Natural Resources, or Counterproliferation.

DOJ Student Volunteer Intern - Office of International Affairs (Summer 2021)

The Department of Justice, Office of International Affairs (OIA) is seeking interns for the Summer 2021 semester. Accepted undergraduate interns will serve on the following OIA teams:

  • Cyber: Assists foreign authorities to secure electronic evidence from U.S.-based electronic service providers in support of criminal investigations and prosecutions.
  • Incoming Mutual Legal Assistance: Assists foreign authorities to secure non-electronic evidence (records, interviews, testimony, etc.) in support of criminal investigations and prosecutions.
  • International Prisoner Transfer: Administers the program that allows convicted foreign nationals sentenced in the U.S. and Americans sentenced abroad to transfer to their home country to serve their sentence provided statutory and treaty requirements are satisfied.
  • Regional Teams: Assists U.S. prosecutors in securing the return of fugitives from the regions below to face justice in the U.S., and coordinates with foreign authorities to share evidence with U.S. prosecutors for use in criminal investigations and prosecutions. Also assists foreign authorities in securing the extradition of fugitives from the U.S.
