Prince George’s County Police Department is seeking qualified applicants to fill a vacant Investigator I/II Crime Scene Investigator position, Grade P-18/P-21, within the Crime Scene Investigation Division.

The incumbent is assigned to the Evidence Unit where he/she performs the primary duties of documentation, evidence collection, preservation, and processing of items of evidence related to Criminal Investigations. This position requires that the incumbent respond to requests for services primarily from sworn members of the Major Crimes Division. The incumbent, when requested, will assist other Divisions within the County with specialized evidence collection services. The incumbent will document all evidence collection duties on the appropriate reports. This position requires testimony in the court system. The incumbent is required to work closely with prosecutors in the preparation of cases for trial. Work assignments require knowledge of Personnel Law, General Orders, and Departmental rules and regulations. The incumbent in this position should have the ability to communicate well with others.

Examples of Work
What You'll Do:
  • Investigates homicide, rapes, armed robbery, departmental shootings, physical and sexual child abuse, and other major crime scenes to determine the best forensic practice based on interviews and forensic investigative techniques.
  • Process for latent fingerprints, take photographs, make diagrams, collect, and preserve physical evidence, attend autopsies, collect additional evidence, and take inked fingerprints as well as palm prints from deceased persons. 
  • Attends court, both Circuit and District, on and off duty, and testifies in criminal cases which he/she has investigated or assisted in the investigation; attends Civil Court as a result of an investigative effort.
  • Prepares reports detailing actions, examinations, processes, and evidence recovered.
  • Prepares evidence for submission to the FBI Laboratory, State Police Laboratory or other laboratories as required. 
  • Completes all necessary training requirements to include in-service training, classes to maintain certifications, and other Departmental training as required. 
  • Assists the Training and Education Division in the training of Prince George's County recruit officers and Municipal Police Officers. 
  • Interviews witnesses and victims to ascertain facts related to the case in order to better apply the appropriate forensic disciplines and application. 
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties assigned which may not be specifically listed within this position description but are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with this class of work.
Qualifications
What You'll Need:
Bachelor's Degree in programs involving investigative and social relations skills such as criminology, law enforcement, business or public administration, one of the social sciences or related fields; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge documenting, preserving, processing, and recovering evidence from crime scenes. 
  • Knowledge of advanced photography, latent print processing techniques, chemical blood enhancement techniques, blood stain pattern analysis, bullet trajectory, and digital photograph archival methods.

Essay: Discuss America’s greatest accomplishment and greatest failure since its founding. Essays should be no more than three pages, double-spaced. We do not expect these essays to be research papers — only expressions of your opinions.

Resume: Submit a resume detailing the extent of your campus involvement, volunteerism, and work experience. This allows us to better assess your leadership abilities.

Writing Samples: Submit two papers written in college-level courses. Writing samples should demonstrate the applicant’s ability to think critically. If possible, applicants should submit papers that bear a professor’s grade and remarks, but this is not required.

Functional Purpose

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1.   2. Assists multiple attorneys on an ongoing basis with preparation and assembling documentation of supporting case materials for proceedings before courts, administrative agencies, commissions, or Congressional bodies

CCJS Summer 2023 Study Abroad Program

Students participating in this study abroad program will travel to Cape Town, South Africa after completing preliminary readings, online discussions, and a pre-departure orientation. In addition to cultural exploration, students participating in this course will gain an appreciation for the types of human trafficking occurring in South Africa and the consequences of and reactions to it. Readings, lectures, speaking engagements, and interactions with direct service providers and NGOs will be combined to obtain the objectives of this course. We expect this experience to be eye-opening, not only to see the committed work of the NGOs but also the devastating consequences of various forms of trafficking in South Africa.

Spring 2023 Internship | Consortium of Social Science Associations

The Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA) is seeking an undergraduate-level intern. COSSA is a non-profit advocacy organization that promotes the value and widespread use of social and behavioral science across the federal government. COSSA advocates in Congress and a variety of Executive Branch agencies in support of federal funding for social science as well as sound policies that positively impact the conduct of social science research. This internship would be of interest to undergraduate students wishing to learn about advocacy/government relations, federal science policy, and/or non-profit organizations.

Intern duties may include, but would not be limited to:

  • Conducting legislative research to assist COSSA staff with their government relations activities. This may include searching federal agency databases for social science projects, research on Members of Congress, and research on bills, regulations, and other policy developments, among other projects.
  • Coverage of events, such as Congressional hearings, federal agency advisory committee meetings, scientific community and coalition events, etc., which may result in a written product, such as a newsletter article.
  • During the spring, assisting with the preparation and execution of COSSA’s Social Science Advocacy Day, and other ad hoc events as needed.
  • Miscellaneous administrative duties i.e. organizing files, updating databases, etc.

Minimum Skills & Qualifications:

  • Ability to work well with others in a collaborative environment.
  • Professional demeanor and attention to detail.
  • Interest in the legislative process; prior experience or knowledge of the legislative process is highly desirable.
  • Curiosity in science and its role in shaping public policy.
  • Strong writing and qualitative research skills.
  • Ability to take direction, work under pressure, and meet deadlines while maintaining professional composure.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).

Candidates should be comfortable supporting a small team of three (3) staff members. COSSA is happy to assist via course credit with a candidate’s home institution. Alternatively, students who are not participating in the internship for college credit may be eligible for a small stipend.

Priority will be given to candidates available to work part time (approximately 20 hours per week), although COSSA can be flexible to accommodate academic schedules. Start and end dates of the internship program are flexible as well.

During the Spring semester, priority will be given to candidates who will be located near the Washington, DC area to assist staff with in-person activities for COSSA’s Social Science Advocacy Day. All COSSA staff and interns may work from home on a regular basis with the ability to work in the DC office if desired. COSSA’s headquarters is in downtown Washington, DC and is Metro accessible from the blue, orange, and silver lines (2 blocks) and the red line (5 blocks).

 If you are a BSOS student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an experiential learning opportunity, apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds. Applications will open in December 2022. 

Applications for unpaid spring 2023 semester experience will be considered on a rolling basis between January 9, 2023 and January 25, 2023 or until funds have been exhausted. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Submit a complete application (all questions answered) by the Best Consideration Date is January 9, 2023.
  • Have completed at least one semester (fall 2022 or earlier) at the University of Maryland.
  • Have at least one semester (spring 2023 or later) left as a student at the University of Maryland.
  • Be enrolled in a BSOS major or an ENSP, NEUR, or SDSC major track housed within the BSOS College.
  • Notifications will be sent on a rolling basis for those that apply by the "best consideration" date. Applicants who apply after the best consideration date can expect to receive a response the following Friday after application has been submitted. 
    All recipients will be asked to submit a Thank You video, which will be shared with the donor(s) of the fund you are receiving. Questions regarding BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds or the application process should be directed to bsos-scholarships@umd.edu.
  • Complete the learning experience for which you apply in spring 2023. If you choose not to complete the experience, you must notify the Selection Committee (bsos-scholarships@umd.edu) and the funds will be rescinded.

 

These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service-learning, and professional or academic virtual conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities including, but not limited to:

  • travel/transportation expenses
  • professional attire
  • software/technology, material needs, not provided by employer/University, but essential to the experience. 
  • conference fees
  • opportunity costs, (i.e., the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship.)

About Us
The Petey Greene Program supports the academic goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through high-quality volunteer tutoring programs, while educating volunteers on the injustice manifest in our carceral system.

The Role
The Petey Greene Program is seeking a UMD Intern to support the implementation of two College Bridge Programs for incarcerated learners starting in the Spring 2023 semester, one in Writing and one in Math.
During the semester, the Volunteer Coordinator will monitor student and volunteer attendance, working with PGP staff to provide debrief opportunities for volunteers. 
Working remotely, they will conduct regular virtual check-ins with tutors to ensure that they remain engaged in the program, providing encouragement and support.
Additionally, they will help track tutor feedback to ensure that it is submitted in a timely
manner. The Volunteer Coordinator reports to and is supervised by the College Bridge
Program Coordinator for Washington, D.C..

Job Description
The Department of Community Corrections is currently seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Drug Court Probation Officer to supervise participants placed in the Drug Court program by the Loudoun County Circuit Court. Duties include submitting reports to the Court, testifying, attending and participating in Drug Court Team meetings, and collaborating with the Drug Court Coordinator. This position establishes and monitors community service work for program participants and ensures that all special conditions of the Court are fulfilled. This position requites regular attendance to court proceedings. maintains accurate automated PTCC notes and case files and performs substance abuse assessments and makes appropriate referrals.

Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Job Requirements
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology or related field, and a minimum of two (2) years related experience in the criminal justice field.

Special Requirements
Must be willing to supervise criminal defendants in a community corrections office setting and perform occasional residential visits. Must be willing to work with criminal offenders who may have violent tendencies and to enter the Loudoun County Adult Detention center or other correctional facilities, as needed. Experience working with criminally involved, substance abuse, addiction, mental health and appropriate services/treatments. Collection of samples of urinalysis and administration of alcohol breath tests is also required. Must have strong writing skills and be able to compile facts and information into concise reports for submission to the Court. The successful candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills to interact with representatives from the legal community such as Commonwealth's Attorneys, Defense Attorneys, law enforcement, Judges and Court Personnel. The ideal candidate will be able to work as part of the Drug Court Team, as well as on the probation team within the Department of Community Corrections. VCIN certification is required, selected candidate will obtain certification within 90 days of hire.

INTERNSHIP DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Spring 2023 Anti-Corruption and Governance Center Internship | Center for International Private Enterprise

Description: The Anti-Corruption and Governance Center (ACGC) focuses on streamlining CIPE’s existing anti-corruption programming and exploring new and innovative anti-corruption approaches. ACGC is seeking a Spring Intern to support its communications development for the anti-corruption programs. The Intern will work with the Center’s Director and Associate Program Officer to develop tweets, blogs, event invitations, podcast notes and descriptions, email campaigns, and supporting documentation for current ACGC programs.  

Timeframe: This position is scheduled to start between January 9, 2023 and January 16, 2023 for a period of 12 weeks. Interns must be able to commit to a minimum of 25 hours per week.

Learning Objectives:  
  • Intern will support ACGC’s Sustainable Investing team to craft sustainable programming focused on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets.
