The Bowie Police Department is currently seeking highly qualified individuals to fill the vacant Police Crime Scene Investigator position. This is a professional position by which the incumbent performs evidence collection, preservation, and documentation of items of evidence. When necessary, this position requires interviewing of witnesses, victims, and officers, and provides testimony in the court system.

Duties:
  • Respond to crime scenes or assignments promptly.
  • Gather factsregarding investigations through interviews of witnesses, patrol officers and investigators. This may occur at active crime scenes.
  • Use proper techniques to collect, maintain, and package items of physical evidence for submission to laboratories and court (examine for fingerprints, conduct detailed photography, prepare diagrams, identify and preserve physical evidence, etc.).
  • Prepares reports that are complete, clear, and concise with an accurate description of the actions taken.
  • Coordinate the securing of crime scenes to ensure that further investigations are not compromised.
  • Operate specialized technical equipment as well as other specialized forensic functions and apply forensic investigative techniques to the investigation of armed robberies, attempted murders and other assaults, and breaking and entering.
  • Respond to court promptly and present oral testimony clearly, truthfully, and accurately as to the facts of the case being prosecuted.
  • Ability to be on-call and respond to scenes within one hour of notification.
  • Ability to maintain an awareness of the status of developing crime trends and patterns, and large scale or unusual events that may be currently active in the city.
  • Other duties as assigned. 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in programs involving investigative and social relations skills, such as Criminology, Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, one of the Social Sciences or related fields.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a Forensic Investigator or similar position
  • Demonstrate the ability to process crime scenes, prepare accurate and detailed reports.
  • Ability to provide accurate and professional testimony during court proceedings.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a thorough background investigation and drug/alcohol screening examination are requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Application of investigative work.
  • Knowledge of and experience with methods, and techniques of laboratory analysis and research work.
  • Knowledge of forensic photography and its methodology in capturing images of victims, suspects, and evidence.
  • Knowledge of City, County, State, and Federal laws, court decisions, affecting the collection, preservation, testing and storage of evidence.
  • Knowledge of courtroom procedures regarding testimony, scheduling, and attorney conferencing.
  • Experience preparing investigative reports.
  • Internal Association of Investigations (IAI) certification
Licenses or Certifications:
  • International Association for Identification (IAI) Certification.
