Summary

Academic Achievement Program
The Academic Achievement Programs (AAP) provides high-quality educational support services, including advising, counseling, teaching, and skill enhancement to improve the retention and graduation of Program students/participants from secondary and postsecondary education. Specifically, AAP’s mission is to provide services that enhance the academic potential and personal growth of each student/participant served.

AAP Tutoring/Supplemental Instruction (SI) Component
AAP’s Tutoring/Supplemental Instruction (SI) Component provides academic support in required General Education (Gen Ed) courses. The component provides the extra attention that will help students compensate for gaps or areas for improvement in their academic development. Tutors and SI Leaders provide supplementary academic reinforcement, clarifying, interpreting, and reviewing key concepts presented in courses. They also serve as models for future development through group/cooperative learning, commonly known as supplemental instruction (SI).

The goal of the Tutoring/SI Component is to provide academic support for a number of lower-level General Education courses primarily in the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences divisions. In the weekly 50 minute sessions, tutors will assist students to obtain a clearer picture of the course material and encourage the students to develop their own study techniques. The tutor structures each weekly session according to the syllabus of the General Education class, but he/she is always willing to address the issues with which students are experiencing difficulties. Overall, each tutoring/SI session is designed to help the students build confidence in their abilities to handle complex issues raised in the classroom. Additionally, the tutoring/SI sessions, with their strong focus on collaborative learning techniques, should encourage the participating students to form their own study groups in the future.

Sessions will consist of 2 to 10 students, depending on the needs and schedule of the students. One on one sessions will be assigned when necessary. The tutor/SI leader will make a “tutoring/SI syllabus” and submit it to the Tutoring/CSS coordinator at the beginning of the semester and submit “lesson plans” each week thereafter.
