New class for Fall 2021: CCJS418K

We are happy to announce a new 400-level Course of Choice for the Fall 2021 semester

CCJS 418K: Police-Community Relations

Prerequisites: CCJS 100, CCJS 105, & CCJS 300
Day/Time/Location: Online - Synchronous Tuesdays 4:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Instructor: Dr. R. Brunson
Brief description of the course: Maintaining positive police-community relations typically involves achieving a delicate balance between providing effective police service and proactive crime control efforts. On one hand, research suggests that the police benefit from citizens’ willingness to cooperate (e.g., reporting crimes, identifying criminals, assisting in investigations, and addressing physical conditions that might facilitate crime). Conversely, effective policing routinely involves tactics that bring the police into close and regular contact with citizens. Furthermore, unwelcome police encounters are often viewed by neighborhood residents, particularly people of color, as intrusive, dehumanizing, and unwarranted, leading citizens to invariably question whether officers respect their constitutional rights and care about their well-being.

*Please remember: all students are limited to permission for up to 3 CCJS courses prior to the first day of classes.  Students can receive permission for CCJS courses through: ccjsstamps.umd.edu
