This role provides support to the human resources and recruitment team during our applicant pre-employment background investigations. The successful candidate will assist with the review of background information submitted by prospective applicants for vacant positions in both sworn and professional categories.  The job function will be a supportive position for the background investigation portion of the recruiting process.
 
Under general supervision, the background investigator reviews the applicant's personal history statement in detail, makes sure all required documents are provided, arranges pre-employment exams, and ensures applicants meet minimum hiring requirements. 
 
  Specific duties include:
 

  • Assists in recruiting prospective applicants.
  • Reviews applications and assists with screening and scheduling of applicants.
  • Conducts comprehensive background investigations on prospective employees to include database inquiries and conducting interviews.
  • Reviews and analyzes applicant personal history of employment, education, references, military service, negative law enforcement contact, criminal history, credit history.
  • Reviews applicant polygraph, psychological, and medical examinations.
  • Prepares comprehensive, detailed written reports of background investigations which draw conclusions and provide recommendations as to the suitability of candidates.  
  • Networks with other public safety agency background investigators.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of law enforcement investigative principles and interview techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement procedures.
  • Knowledge of statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of equal employment opportunity laws.
  • Ability to present ideas effectively both orally and written form.
  • Ability to conduct detailed analytical evaluations and to prepare related reports and recommendations.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of ethics and integrity.
