Join Alpha Phi Sigma: First Meeting on Sept 25

Image result for alpha phi sigmaThe first meeting of Alpha Phi Sigma (APS) will be held on Wednesday, September 25 from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM in LeFrak Hall, room 1222.  Current and interested members should try to attend.  

A new Board of Officers (President, Vice President, and Secretary) will be elected and activities will be planned.  In order to run for an officer position, students must be a current member of APS.  Students joining APS in Fall 2019 will not be eligible to run for office. Students interested in running for office should prepare a very brief presentation about themselves.  If you cannot attend but would like to run for an office, please email Nicole Jackson (jacksonn@umd.edu) a short blurb about yourself that will be read to the group.

Alpha Phi Sigma:
Alpha Phi Sigma is the National Criminal Justice Honor Society founded in 1942. Alpha Phi Sigma recognizes academic excellence of Undergraduate and Graduate students of Criminal Justice, as well as Juris Doctorate students.  The goals of Alpha Phi Sigma are to honor and promote academic excellence, community service, educational leadership and unity (http://www.alphaphisigma.org/).  The CCJS staff advisor for Alpha Phi Sigma is Nicole Jackson.


Membership Requirements:
Membership is open to CCJS majors who have completed at least 40 total credits with at least 12 credits in CCJS courses. Applicants must have completed at least one semester at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and have an established UMD grade point average.  Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.20 and a minimum CCJS major grade point average of a 3.20. 

To Apply:
Applicants must 1.  Fill out the application 2.  Submit the application and  a check (personal is fine)/ money order/cash (must be exact change) to the chapter advisor Nicole Jackson in CCJS Advising (2201 LeFrak).  Checks and money orders must be made out to "Alpha Phi Sigma" for $75.00 ($70 of which goes to the National fee and $5 goes to the local chapter).  
Applications are processed once at the beginning of the fall semester (due: October 4) and once at the beginning of the spring semester (due: February 14). It generally takes a few weeks to get official acceptance.  Once a student has been accepted, he or she will receive a certificate and pin.  Students are notified of their acceptance via Nicole Jackson.
