National Center on Sexual Exploitation internships for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022

The National Center on Sexual Exploitation’s (NCOSE) is currently accepting applications for their Law Enforcement Internship for both the Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 terms.  Interns participate in the ongoing work of defending human dignity, exposing and combatting the full spectrum of sexual exploitation (i.e., pornography, prostitution, stripping, sexual trafficking, child sexual abuse, sexual assault and rape). NCOSE internships offer a unique opportunity to address sexual exploitation issues while gaining new skills through hands-on opportunities that seek to prevent exploitation before it begins, which foster a national culture that stands for freedom from sexual exploitation. Interns also enjoy abundant opportunities to meet nationally recognized leaders in the field of anti-sexual exploitation and attend education briefings. The program also offers interns an opportunity to investigate their individual gifts and develop new skills while working at NCOSE’s headquarters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Performs work on special projects as assigned by the Director of Law Enforcement Training and Survivor Services or the Law Centers Senior Vice President and General Counsel. Such work may include:
    • Assist in developing relationships and building out our coalition to include more direct service providers; harnessing those relationships to seek guidance for high impact policy
    • Assist with survivor plaintiffs;
    • Assist with law enforcement trainings and workshops;
    • Help organize NCOSE events;
    • Assist in supporting NCOSE legislative or governmental initiatives through research;
    • Assisting NCOSE in its strategies to reduce demand for commercial sex through research of current events and legislation;
    • Collaborating and supporting other activities as needed.
  • Represents NCOSE (as an observer) and reports on events at coalition meetings, and webinars
  • Keeps abreast of current developments (including legislative changes) and conducts research (as directed) using various media and academic resources relating to:
    • harms of pornography;
    • harms of prostitution and other forms of commercial sex;
    • demand for commercial sex and male sex buying behavior;
    • organizations promoting, distributing, and/or profiting from sexual exploitation (pornography, stripping, prostitution, sexual assault, risky sexy behavior); and,
    • sex trafficking of men, women and children.
  • Assists NCOSE at conferences, meetings, events or committees as directed.
  • Assists as needed with office management including answering of telephones, responding to email or other written requests, drafting correspondence, and filing (if not working remotely).

Fall 2021 Program Intern position w/ Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault

The Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MCASA) is currently accepting applications for their Program Intern position for the Fall 2021 semester. This internship located at the metro-accessible Silver Spring, MD office. Remote work is ongoing during COVID-19 restrictions. A minimum commitment of 15 hours per week for 3 months is required.  CCJS students can earn credit for this internship through the CCJS internship course.

Through hands-on learning responsibilities, MCASA’s program interns are engaged in the important effort to end rape, child sexual abuse, and the full continuum of sexual violence including campus sexual assault and human sex trafficking. They are exposed to the latest thinking in the field of sexual assault prevention and response through webinars and trainings, professional meetings, and written resource materials. Program interns also come away with practical knowledge about a statewide nonprofit organization’s strategies for office management, internal and external communications, professional training, and public outreach. 

Intern Objectives

  • Develop and expand knowledge regarding sexual violence and policies to prevent and respond to sexual assault and abuse.
  • Develop ability to write and format professional documents such as letters, fact sheets, website content, and newsletter articles.
  • Expand professional speaking skills by answering and making telephone calls.
  • Become familiar with client referrals by providing information about MCASA’s Sexual Assault Legal Institute and Maryland rape crisis and recovery centers to survivors who call the office.
  • Learn about event management by assisting with logistics coordination for professional training sessions and fundraising events.
  • Enhance research skills by completing written projects regarding sexual violence.
  • Develop an understanding of nonprofit membership development and engagement by updating and maintaining electronic database records.
  • Participate in public outreach by attending events, staffing community information fairs, and fulfilling orders for resource brochures.
  • Become familiar with a varied-pace office environment that juggles both immediate and longer-term projects.
  • Contribute to development of office resources on specific topics.

Paid Research Opportunity in the School of Public Health

The Woodlawn Project at the University of Maryland School of Public Health has several openings for paid research assistants for a study on the health and wellbeing of a cohort of African American adults. This large-scale, NIH-funded study has been ongoing since 1966, and we are now contacting approximately 1,000 study participants to complete an Age 60 telephone interview. We are looking for motivated, responsible, detail-oriented students who are able to commit to working with us for 2021-2022 academic year. Research assistants must be very comfortable making phone calls.

The positions are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Tuition remission is not provided. 

Primary Responsibilities: Locating study participants and completing 90-minute phone interviews. Engaging in continuous quality assurance meetings/trainings. 

Hours per Week: Approximately 15 hours.

Temporary Pretrial Investigator position w/ City of Alexandria

The City of Alexandria is seeking to fill the temporary role of a Pretrial Investigator. This position is part of the Probation/Pretrial Job Family. Incumbents perform investigative and support work with regards to pretrial. Responsibilities may include conducting interviews with defendants; collecting and verifying background information; preparing reports outlining investigation and interview findings; and using applicable tools to assess defendants risk to the community.

This position is responsible for investigating and generating reports on defendants to assist in court decisions. It includes but is not limited to the following:

  1. Interviews defendants by telephone and/or through home visits to assess potential next steps; determine defendants to be interviewed.
  2.  Utilizes various databases to gather information on a defendant's criminal history, court proceedings, and/or any other court involvement; generates reports to assist courts in reaching a decision.
  3. Researches cases by reviewing appropriate paperwork, checking relevant history, and contacting relevant parties with questions/concerns.
  4. Maintains case records, interviews, and court documents by creating treatment progress reports, interview findings, investigation outlines, data entry of all reports
  5. Assist in determining risk, safety necessity of referral, progress, and/or counseling necessity for defendants using applicable tools and databases; determines if a drug/alcohol assessment or test is necessary or beneficial.
  6. Monitors daily activities to include: administering drug tests, utilizing electronic monitoring equipment, and recording daily enrollment counts.
  7. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Probation Officer positions open w/ City of Alexandria

The City of Alexandria is seeking to hire Probation Officers. A Probation Officer performs a full range of intake and investigative work which provides case management to adults involved with Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, General District Court and Circuit Court. An employee in this class is granted a wide range of authority under the Code of Virginia. This Probation Officer carries a case load which includes complex and difficult cases. This position is responsible for providing high quality supervision to adult pretrial and post-trial clients (defendants and offenders) referred to Alexandria Criminal Justice Services. Works directly with Commonwealth Attorney, Defense Attorney and Treatment Provider to provide continuity of care and treatment. Assist clients’ with maintaining compliance with the court’s orders. This Probation Officer performs his/her duties under the general supervision of the Director, and maybe called upon to be available on a 24-hour basis in the event of an emergency or crisis.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct interviews, risk assessments and develop treatment plans
  • Meets with clients' in various locations to monitor living situation and/or monitor behavior and compliance to treatment and program services
  • Prepares and files showcause petitions, court reports and sentencing letters; notifies the client of the court dates, attends and testifies and makes recommendations in court as needed
  • Enters and updates data in the PreTrial Community Corrections (PTCC) Case Management System
  • Writes and maintains thorough and accurate chronological records of all client related contacts
  • Monitors payment plans for court costs, restitution, treatment and supervision fees
  • Researches criminal history via automated databases
  • Provides supportive services to clients such as crisis intervention, counseling, problem solving, etc.
  • Implements sanctions/rewards for pro-social behavior with collaboration of interdisciplinary team members
  • Maintains & prepares statistical data and administrative reports as needed
  • Performs related work as required.

American Academy of Diplomacy Fall Internship opportunity for students

The American Academy of Diplomacy seeks an individual interested in American foreign policy and the practice of diplomacy, as well as in the inner workings of a nonprofit organization. Because the Academy is a small organization, the internship offers students a unique opportunity to become an integral part of the organization’s core team. A student or a recent graduate with continuing education goals and interest in the Foreign Service will find this internship particularly rewarding, as they will be able to interact with our distinguished members, assist with the administration of the Academy, learn about the Foreign Service and gain insights into the workings of how foreign policy is carried out. As an integral part of the Program, the intern will attend meetings and events with some of the most distinguished retired American ambassadors. The Intern will be involved in: managing all the Academy’s social media accounts, event and meeting planning and implementation, preparing minutes of Academy meetings, communicating with Academy members, updating content for the Academy website, managing contact lists, and supporting the professional staff. The Program Associate will provide detailed guidance and constructive critique to maximize the learning experience. The intern will devote 20 to 40 hours a week depending on his/her availability. 

Requirements for a Successful Experience

  • Interest in American foreign policy, the U.S. Department of State, or the Foreign Service,
  • Interest in nonprofit work,
  • Ability to take initiative and communicate effectively with supervisors,
  • Professional manner and ability to maintain confidentiality,
  • Previous professional experience with social media (preferably Twitter, Facebook and Instagram), including experience with analytics,
  • Detail-oriented, e.g. capable of sending out member emails without guidance, detailed note-taking at Board and Executive meetings, etc.,
  • Ability to function independently as well as part of a team,
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint),
  • Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software preferred,
  • Proficient in Gmail and Google Apps preferred,
  • Front end WordPress or Wix development experience preferred, and
  • Friendly and outgoing with a good sense of humor.

Please note this internship is not research based. Participation in the Program is without compensation or any expectation of employment at the conclusion of the Program.  However, academic credit is available and reliant upon school requirements.

One intern in the D.C. metro area and one intern for a virtual format will be hired. Please note in your application which program you wish you apply for – either in-person or virtual. The candidate must be able to commit to the entire fall term.
