The position performs public safety communication functions as it relates to the criminal justice system. Work involves receiving, prioritizing, and entering emergency and non-emergency police calls into the Computer Automated Dispatch (CAD) system as well as dispatching and monitoring calls for service via two-way radio. This position is responsible for obtaining and disseminating a variety of reports and law enforcement sensitive documents. The work has unusual demands such as responding to people on the phone or in person that are uncooperative, hostile and under extreme stress. In addition to the public safety demands of this position, it also performs office clerical work which involves multi-tasking office functions and procedures. The employee must be able to maintain a level of professionalism that best represents the Sheriff's Office and serves the citizens of Calvert County. The work is performed under the supervision of the Sheriff's Communications Officer III or sworn staff in their absence.

The position reports to the Sheriff’s Communications Officer III and may receive direction and training from the Sheriff’s Communications Officer II.  

Essential Job Functions


Serves as first point of contact for members of the public who visit the Sheriff's Office, which includes a range of functions, including direct assistance and guidance.

 
Receives and assists visitors to the office; queries visitors and directs them to appropriate staff or offices.
 
Receives, screens, and refers telephone calls; queries callers and transfers or refers calls to appropriate staff or other offices which may require police assistance.

 
Receives emergency/non-emergency calls from citizens and ensures appropriate information is entered in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system; retrieves data as requested.

 
Forwards information to the Police and/or Fire Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Communications section and Animal Control.

 
Assists police communications personnel in obtaining additional assistance, as needed from various other governmental and private agencies, including forensic investigators, funeral homes, County public facilities, State Highway Administration, County Roads, private towing companies and local hospitals when requested.
 
Interacts with assigned officers from all divisions of the Sheriff's Office and other police agencies through telephone, two-way radios, cell phones and pagers.

 
Processes applications and payments from citizens for fingerprinting and those requesting copies of reports; explains the process to requestor and forwards documents to the records section.

 
Confirms warrants/criminal summons and peace/protective orders on persons. Locates, retrieves and passes along such documents to officers to serve in person or fax to other agencies for service; clears warrants from agency computer system.

 
Maintains and retrieves accurate vehicle impound information; processes information by keying data into computer databases and other computerized record systems.

 
Produces a variety of typed or word-processed documents such as letters, memoranda, and reports; proofs and edits typed materials for accuracy of grammar, spelling, punctuation and format and makes corrections.
 

Notifies public via social media for serious incidents.

Assists with training and mentoring new employees (civilian/sworn)

Monitors security cameras of multiple locations.

Notifies Command Staff of all major incidents and notifies community of incidents such as road closures due to accidents, police activity, missing persons, and so forth.

Activates the UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) pilots when the need arises.

Contacts ID Investigations Team (Office of the Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division) in the event of a police involved fatality.

Tracks computer connectivity issues for the Deputies and reports them to Technology Services.

Receives and logs court ordered Emergency Petitions and notifies supervisor of action required.
