Intern for a Day matches undergraduate UMD students with professionals working in their field of interest for either a half-day or full-day in-person job shadowing experience. Students have access to  many hosts - 200+ hosts for virtual informational interviews and in-person job shadowing!

This semester, hosts are offering either full day/half day in-person job shadowing opportunities OR 1-hour virtual informational interviewing opportunities. You can find all hosts who are offering in-person job shadowing opportunities on the "In-Person Job Shadowing Hosts" tab and the hosts who are willing to connect for remote informational interviewing opportunities on the "Virtual Info Interview Hosts" tab. Please note that you will find different hosts on each tab. There are no hosts who are offering both job shadowing and informational interviewing.

This is information session will provide students with an opportunity to learn more about the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Resource Planning Office (RPO). This position is located in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB), Court Liaison Division (CLD) and consist of 6 units/offices: Administrative Operations; Traffic Adjudication Unit; Papering Elimination Project Office (PEP); Court Check In/Out; Court Appearance Notification Systems Office (CANS); and Report Administration and Audit Processing Unit (RAAP).  The CLD is the first point of contact that aides the judicial systems in the Metropolitan Area by processing, inputting, and transcribing all requests for MPD officers’ court appearances within the legal system. 

The incumbent provides divisional support that will aide attorneys /paralegals with correct information to litigate their work. 

This Legal Assistant position is covered under the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) bargaining unit and you may be required to pay an agency fee through direct payroll deductions.

This incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  • Records arrival and departure of all members attending court proceedings, and handling court matters. Records the arrival of members, including outside agencies, attending Traffic Adjudication hearings at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Processes and maintains arrest, and other, documents received from the Department of Corrections.
  • Assembles and processes all arrests documents that are officer-less presentment cases. Searches legal documents and court cases; verifying references and citations.  Inputs case information into database. Provides documents needed for Traffic Adjudication hearings. 
  • Receives Court Appearance Notification requests and subpoenas daily; stores, retrieves, revises; and maintains information, records, and files; and makes adjustments and/or corrections to data already entered into computer systems.  
  • Prepares letters to attorneys, to inform them on how to request Officers for court, and how to follow-up to ensure officers were notified of court dates.
  • Manages and records incoming and outgoing correspondence. Composes correspondence of a non-technical and technical nature based upon oral instructions, brief notes, or information available in the files and records; and proofreads work for accuracy in spelling, grammar, context, and format. 
  • Maintains the history of office supplies and equipment. 
  • Communicates, verbally or in writing, with various offices such as Office of the Attorney General, United States Attorney’s Office, Office of the Parole Commission, Office of Police Complaints, Office of the General Counsel, D.C. Superior Court, United States District Court, and other government and non-government agencies and law offices in and around the surrounding Washington Metropolitan Area.  
  • Assists the Department of Motor Vehicles with ensuring that members are responding for scheduled court hearings.

The Arlington Circuit Court is seeking a Court Specialist II to perform advanced administrative duties related to the Circuit Court Judicial Office (CCJO)'s post-Court operation. This position will review and update post-court Management System (CMS) entries to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and consistency. This position will also provide support by scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements and training accommodations, and maintaining office and judges' calendars;

The Arlington Circuit Court is a Virginia State trial court with jurisdiction over criminal and civil matters. The Judicial Chambers is composed of four Circuit Court judges, four judicial law clerks, and four administrative staff persons. Work is performed according to established guidelines under general supervision and/or direction.
 
 Specific duties include:

  • Assisting the Court Manager with clearing monthly and end of the year statistical reports;
  • Managing Court daily dockets and tracking court orders for case closures;
  • Updating information in Court's CMS and retrieving documents in the electronic case filings; 
  • Verifying accuracy of the Court's weighted caseload entries to ensure the Court receives proper credit with the State Supreme Court;
  • Serving as back-up for the Court Administrators electronic filing queues;
  • Assisting court with recording time standards information for cases in the Chambers calendar (MS Outlook);
  • Scheduling cases on the Court's docket and preparing correspondence and court orders as required;
  • Initiating and entering invoice into County’s automated financial system; 
  • Managing deadlines for assignments and following up with other members of staff, litigants, or attorneys; and
  • Assisting with writing grants and scholarship applications.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Excellent customer service skills to deal with the public in person and over the phone;
  • Familiarity with the Supreme Court of Virginia Case Management System (CMS); preferable experience using electronic records management systems such as UNITY; and
  • Communication skills and the ability to compose letters and narratives on behalf of the Judges to attorneys and other legal professionals to successfully complete the work of the Court.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:

  • Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate or the equivalent; and
  • Significant paraprofessional, customer service and/or administrative experience, preferably in the legal field.
Substitution: Successful completion of college coursework may substitute up to one year of experience. Additional related experience may be substituted for up to two years of high school on a year for year basis.

Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Creating and updating reports and spreadsheets with complex formulas in Excel;
  • Maintaining multiple electronic systems (i.e., staff calendars, forms, variety of files, etc.)
  • Processing post-court entries into the Court's Case Management System (CMS);
  • Reviewing and disseminating court daily dockets and preparing court orders:
  • Working with sensitive and/or confidential information, especially related to handling of legal information; and/or
  • Familiarity with legal terminology.

Terp Young Scholars Program Mentor

 Terp Young Scholars is one of the highest paying opportunities on campus and student Mentors have a tremendous impact on the high school students.

The mentor application for Terp Young Scholars in Summer 2024 is now open (here!) and we’re excited to share some updates:

  • In summer 2024, we’re increasing the pay for TYS mentors to a record-high stipend of $2,540 (for in-person mentors).  This is based on a rate of $20/hour.
  • The hours for TYS have been adjusted so that most mentor days (except for check-in) will start at 9:30 and end by 4:30 (and 2:00 pm on certain Fridays!).
  • This summer, we’re asking Mentors to plan activities based on their interests, hobbies and extracurricular activities.  Love to crochet, juggle, play soccer or…..?   Terp Young Scholars will provide support for Mentors to share this interest with our prospective Terps! 
  • Mentors will also be able to specify if they’d like to work with students in a particular course so send your most passionate undergraduates our way.

Prospective Mentors are encouraged to attend an information session to learn more about the program and ask questions.  Students must register for an information session to receive a Zoom link.

Prince George’s County Muslim Council is a civic and political organization that works to involve our community in the civic and policy affairs of our county toward the goal of improving the quality of life for the Muslim community and all of our neighbors in the county. Our Foundation engages in community service activities including educational and economic opportunities such as our internship program.

     This internship program is targeted toward college students between the ages of 18 and 25 interested in public policy, media, advocacy, civic society, and the law. The position is in the Crime Victims Compensation Program of the D.C. Superior Court. The Assistant Claims Examiner reports to the Program Director or their designee and assists claimants with filing CVCP applications. The position also provides support to the Claims Examiners.


Duties

Brief Description of Major Duties: 

  • Responds to inquiries from the general public, service providers, government agencies, and court personnel about the Crime Victims Compensation program. 
  • Reviews and ensures claims applications are complete and submitted for processing in accordance with the governing statutes and laws.
  • Submits completed applications to claims examiner for determination of eligibility. 
  • Creates electronic files of applications received and verifies all necessary documentation included. 
  • Determines and coordinates eligibility of temporary housing placement for requesting claimants. 
  • Prepares and processes Notices of Determination for applicants and communicates with the Moderator regarding the outcome of the application. 
  • Assists applicants with filing applications. 
  • Reviews payment requested submitted by the Claims Examiner for approval. 
  • Compiles and prepares financial data for reporting. 
  • Assists the Crime Victims Compensation Program Director and Accounting officer with administrative tasks as needed.

Main Purpose of the Job:

The Appeals Clerk is responsible for case initiation for criminal and juvenile appeals, including opening case records in MDEC; receiving, reviewing, and storing physical files; and sending out appropriate notices and orders according to standing business processes. Other duties are to assist patrons by telephone and in person and serve as a backup to the Civil Appeals Clerk when required.

Education: High School diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience: Two (2) years of work experience, to include one (1) year in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Note:

A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures.

Knowledge of office practices and procedures.

Knowledge of business English, including proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Skill in using office productivity software to monitor workflow.

Ability to balance multiple conflicting priorities.

Ability to communicate case information to other court personnel, attorneys, and self-represented parties.

Ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing and via telephone.
