POSITION SUMMARY:

Highly skilled, technical position which bears the responsibility of rendering assistance in the investigation of a variety of criminal activities, as well as the scientific examination of an ever expanding assortment of evidence encountered in criminal investigations. This task must be accomplished with such a degree of legal correctness and scientific procedure as to allow the findings to be utilized by police personnel in the logical conclusion of an investigation and also stand-up to the scrutiny of our judicial system in a court of law. To this end the collection, preservation and examination of any evidence involved is tantamount. The experience, education and specialized training of the technician allows him to lend his expertise in the rapidly growing field of forensic investigation, which includes, but is not limited to the following venues.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Performs advanced technical level police support services work, which may include supervision, under regular supervision from a technical superior. Work involves providing civilian advanced technical support within a police related activity. Work includes responding to and examining crime and accident scenes; identifying, collecting, recording and preserving evidence; and storing and securing records in compliance with applicable laws. Work may also include being responsible for the forensic field of identification, technical work in a police laboratory; operating and maintaining laboratory equipment; and preparing and analyzing evidence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Works and cooperates with co-workers and supervisors at all levels.

Learns and performs all essential job functions accurately.

Photography: Operates digital cameras and other photographic equipment to capture images of crime scenes, victims, and physical evidence. Examines, enhances, and produces images of physical evidence including latent fingerprints, palm prints, and images from photographs and videotape. Maintains image files on data storage devices. May participate in photography assignments, including photographing line-ups, copying photographs, and other related photographic tasks.

Crime Scene Investigation: Identify, document, collect, package and preserve physical evidence of various types for laboratory examination and presentation in court as part of police and fire investigations.

Evidence Processing: Processes, and determines the proper method for processing, submitted evidence for the recovery of latent fingerprints and other evidence. Use of powder and chemical techniques as appropriate for the evidence.  Ensure chain of custody is maintained. Enhances latents, footwear and biological evidence utilizing approved chemical techniques.
 
Prepares detailed and accurate reports related to crime scene and evidence processing in accordance with procedures including use of approved forms.  Participates in the administrative and technical review of case files.
Prepares and presents evidence, photographs, and sketches and testifies in criminal courts.

Provides forensic training including preparation of presentations for use as part of presentation to in-service and new recruit training programs. Instruct interns in aspects of the Forensic Sciences Division. Conduct presentations and tours for community groups, schools, and law enforcement personnel. Conduct research studies utilizing new techniques, materials and equipment. 

Participates in continuing professional development opportunities including attendance at conferences, schools and seminars to keep abreast of new forensic technology.
Cleans, maintains, and organizes vehicle. Orders and maintains supplies, and prepares equipment required to perform duties.
 
Other forensic laboratory duties as assigned.
