The Arlington County Sheriff Office is currently seeking a Pretrial Officer. The Pretrial Officer’s primary responsibility is to utilize resources to gain conformity and compliance of individuals placed on the Supervised Release Program (Pretrial). This employee is accountable for collecting data, conducting investigations, and submitting reports for the Judicial Officer’s (Judge) review before it is determined an individual is released under supervision while final disposition of their case is being adjudicated. This employee works with clients to maintain the court-ordered conditions set for their release but also notifies the court of violations during their supervision.

Specific duties include: 

  • Conducting interviews of criminal defendants arrested on state and/or local warrants in the ACDF;
  • Conducting risk assessments using the VPRAI of jailed defendants;
  • Transferring information from the defendant interviews to the VA PRAXIS and VPRAI software program;
  • Accessing and entering results of first appearance and other confidential data into the Virginia Pretrial Community Corrections database (PTCC);
  • Preparing a pretrial investigation Court Report with recommendations to assist courts in decision making related to granting or reconsidering bail;
  • Running criminal history checks of active Pretrial Release defendants as needed;
  • Preparing progress letters for the Sheriff and Judges and conducting alcohol and drug screening on program participants as needed;
  • Performing record checks and obtaining background information as requested by the Courts;
  • Maintaining confidential criminal histories and inmate record files using computers and other sources; and/or completing necessary court paperwork and verifying defendant's information;
  • Seeking capias or show cause order when defendants fail to comply with the conditions of bail or supervision as needed; and
  • Testifying in court as needed.

May perform other related tasks as required.

The position serves as the Community Supervision Officer, located in the Office of Community Supervision and Intervention Services within Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency for the District of Columbia (CSOSA). CSOSA provides community supervision of adult offenders released by the DC Superior Court or the United States Parole Commission on probation, parole and supervised release in the District of Columbia.


Duties

Investigates the background of criminal offenders to identify factors that determine their level of risk related to public safety utilizing a risk/needs assessment actuarial. Assesses the offenders' need for assistance, develops a supervision plan, sets priorities, makes appropriate referrals to social service programs, and monitors their progress while under supervision pursuant to the terms and conditions set forth by the releasing authority.

Attends judicial conferences and provides formal written and oral testimony at court and the United States Parole Commission hearings pertaining to offenders under the incumbent's supervision. Based on an independent evaluation of circumstances, the incumbent produces timely and accurate written reports and makes oral representations to the designated decision-makers, to include recommendations to Judges or the United States Parole Commission regarding the disposition of assigned cases.

Performs case management services for individuals referred to program resources. Tracks social services program participation through an automated case management system.

The incumbent will be required to conduct criminal record checks using a variety of criminal justice databases (i.e., NCIC III, WALES, JUSTIS, SENTRY) to verify that offenders are wanted and/or have committed a new criminal offense while under supervision. The incumbent, while under the supervisor's direction, will contact and coordinate with law enforcement partners to assist in the execution of warrants.

Performs case management services to individuals assigned, such as gathering, compiling, updating, and maintaining data for selected case files. Interviews various program participants, and makes telephone and written inquiries to update case data at periodic intervals. Tracks and manages interventions and offender's participation in community-based programs via an automated case management system.

Identifies appropriate social service assistance programs for criminal offenders and works with community partners to provide services that focus on decreasing recidivism rates.

  • Provide FBI policy to other agencies regarding packaging, maintenance and storage of evidence to assist in the development of their evidence program or for coordinative purposes.
  • Testify in a court of law concerning the security and chain-of-custody of evidence.
  • Responsible for the receipt, retention and disposition of evidence for the field office, which includes all items seized, recovered or contributed properties which are expected to be introduced in court and/or subject to chain-of-custody attack, regardless of size as collected by SAs and other law enforcement personnel, ensuring it is appropriately collected, documented and stored.
  • Handle HAZMAT evidence.
  • Responsible for the security aspects of the Evidence Control Room (ECR) including safe combinations and secure areas, and personnel traffic to and from ECR locations.
