Located in the nation’s capital, The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the chief legal office of the District of Columbia. The OAG enforces the laws of the District, defends, and provides legal advice to the District’s government agencies and protects the interests of the District’s residents. This position is located The Civil Litigation Division.

The Civil Litigation Division (CLD) of the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia is seeking a Paralegal Specialist for the General Litigation Section. The Civil Litigation Division defends the District of Columbia, including District agencies, officers, and employees, in civil lawsuits filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking monetary damages, equitable remedies, and other relief.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect and inventory documents, ensuring thorough and accurate record-keeping.
  • Conduct first-level reviews of discovery documents using Relativity to identify relevant information.
  • Prepare initial drafts of responses to document requests and interrogatories.
  • Draft initial requests for documents and interrogatories in routine case types, including employment discrimination, whistleblower, personal injury, and excessive force or other police/corrections officer misconduct cases.
  • Maintain production indices for incoming and outgoing document productions, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare third-party subpoenas and accompanying cover letters, in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Develop and update subpoena trackers for all subpoenas issued, ensuring comprehensive tracking of all requests.
  • Prepare deposition notices and manage related scheduling logistics.
  • Draft and send hold letters to preserve relevant documents and information.
  • Complete and maintain Relativity intake forms for efficient document management.
  • Update case information and deadlines in Abacus, ensuring all records are current and accessible.
  • Organize and maintain case files on the V drive, ensuring ease of access for legal team members.
  • Obtain Medicare and Medicaid lien information as necessary for case preparation.
  • Support trial preparation efforts, including the creation of witness and trial binders.
  • Provide assistance to the trial team during hearings and trials, including in-person support as needed.
