Prince George’s County Police Department is seeking qualified current Police Civilian Employee Association members to fill Investigator I/II/Crime Scene Investigator positions, Grade P-18/P-21, within the Crime Scene Investigation Division.

The incumbent is assigned to the Evidence Unit where he/she performs the primary duties of documentation, evidence collection, preservation, and processing of items of evidence related to Criminal Investigations. This position requires that the incumbent respond to requests for services primarily from sworn members of the Major Crimes Division. The incumbent, when requested, will assist other Divisions within the County with specialized evidence collection services. The incumbent will document all evidence collection duties on the appropriate reports. This position requires testimony in the court system. The incumbent is required to work closely with prosecutors in the preparation of cases for trial. Work assignments require knowledge of Personnel Law, General Orders, and Departmental rules and regulations. The incumbent in this position should have the ability to communicate well with others.

Examples of Work

What You'll Do:

  • Investigates homicide, rapes, armed robbery, departmental shootings, physical and sexual child abuse, and other major crime scenes to determine the best forensic practice based on interviews and forensic investigative techniques.
  • Process for latent fingerprints, take photographs, make diagrams, collect, and preserve physical evidence, attend autopsies, collect additional evidence, and take inked fingerprints as well as palm prints from deceased persons. 
  • Attends court, both Circuit and District, on and off duty, and testifies in criminal cases which he/she has investigated or assisted in the investigation; attends Civil Court as a result of an investigative effort.
  • Prepares reports detailing actions, examinations, processes, and evidence recovered.
  • Prepares evidence for submission to the FBI Laboratory, State Police Laboratory or other laboratories as required. 
  • Completes all necessary training requirements to include in-service training, classes to maintain certifications, and other Departmental training as required. 
  • Assists the Training and Education Division in the training of Prince George's County recruit officers and Municipal Police Officers. 
  • Interviews witnesses and victims to ascertain facts related to the case in order to better apply the appropriate forensic disciplines and application.  
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties assigned which may not be specifically listed within this position description but are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with this class of work

Qualifications

What You'll Need:
Bachelor's Degree in programs involving investigative and social relations skills such as criminology, law enforcement, business or public administration, one of the social sciences or related fields; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Thorough knowledge documenting, preserving, processing, and recovering evidence from crime scenes. Knowledge of advanced photography, latent print processing techniques, chemical blood enhancement techniques, blood stain pattern analysis, bullet trajectory, and digital photograph archival methods.
