ORGANIZING & OUTREACH INTERN (SPRING 2023)

Job Description
The ACLU-DC seeks a highly motivated organizing intern for Spring of 2023. This intern position is primarily to support the Organizing Department and will report directly to the on-staff Campaign Organizer. The issues our organizers work across include Criminal Legal Reform, Youth Justice and Economic Justice.

This is a temporary, part-time position, from January - May 2023.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support organizing trainings (storytelling, research meetings, issue slicing, etc) to build community and skills across issues and campaigns
  • Support campaigns such as Crisis Response, Community Oversight Surveillance-DC, Police Accountability, and Courtwatch DC.
  • Conduct research on issue campaigns and targets for outreach
  • Assist with coalition meetings & ACLU-DC events
  • Assist in outreach and education efforts, including helping draft outreach materials tied to ACLU-DC issue campaigns and educational efforts, helping identify targets for outreach, and assisting Campaign Organizer and Community Engagement Associate.
  • Working with our organizers on the legislative process and support digital organizing efforts for DC Council Budget.
Qualifications
  • An effective communicator in written and oral form.
  • A passion for building community power.
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Technical computer skills, especially in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Comfortable working alone on assignments and in collaboration with others.
  • Respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances.
  • A commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, social justice, racial equity, and to advancing the ACLU-DC’s values, mission, and programs
  • Must currently be a resident of D.C., Maryland, or Virgina (or plan to be during the internship), and be able to attend in-person events.
  • Ability to commit to 20 hours a week from January 30, 2023 - May 30, 2023.
Additional Information
Compensation:
The ACLU-DC offers paid internships in exchange for a commitment to work the minimum hours for the entire semester. If the student chooses to get school credit and the school prohibits the student from accepting pay, it is the student’s choice whether they want to get credit or receive monetary payment. Salary ranges between $16.10 per hour and $17.00 per hour and is contingent upon related education/experience. This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime compensation under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
