Scope of Work
Extended case management interns will assist IRC’s extended services team with daily activities that help to welcome and contribute to the self-sufficiency of refugees, asylees and other humanitarian immigrants in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The extended services team assists clients with help needed to overcome barriers preventing them from accessing ELT, gainful employment, health care, or other community resources necessary to achieve integration. These barriers may include but are not limited to lack of childcare, limited transportation, language illiteracy, financial illiteracy, food insecurity, and unfamiliarity with U.S. work culture and customs. Interns will work directly with individual clients and families to assist with providing case management services.

Learning Objectives
  • Gain an understanding of the U.S. refugee resettlement process and services available to clients in Baltimore/Maryland.
  • Learn how to effectively facilitate and advocate for clients’ access to timely and culturally responsive supportive services.
  • Learn how to identify, adapt and create culturally appropriate educational and informative resources for clients.

Responsibilities
  • Assist clients who are not working by connecting them to some means of support such as SNAP, SSI, and/or TANF as quickly as possible.
  • In coordination with the ECM team, conduct orientation sessions on topics relevant to ECM clients such as, navigating public benefits, using public transportation, budgeting & financial counselling, accessing community resources, etc.
  • Assist clients with health care needs such as Medicaid/Medicare applications and follow up, MCO selections and enrolment, and with accessing health care services.
  • Making appropriate referrals to enable the client to access needed services such as ESL, Mental Health Resources, - Employment, and Immigration services.
  • Assist with service documentation through case-notes and case file maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Prior experience and/or interest working with refugees, asylees and other migrant populations preferred.
  • Prior experience and/or interest in case management or social work preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment.
  • Flexible and reliable, with outstanding attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and we-based applications (databases, Box).
  • Fluency in English required. Bilingual ability in one of the predominant languages of the local client base is desired.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable access to a vehicle with current insurance and the ability to travel regularly throughout Baltimore strongly preferred.
