The British Government’s Embassy in Washington DC has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and driven person to join the Justice and Home Affairs team as Support Officer. In this role, you will be working in a diverse international environment to support UK diplomats, armed forces personnel and other country-based staff operating across the British Government’s network of Consulates and Government Offices in the United States. This network provides a platform for approximately 30 Government departments and agencies to conduct their work in the United States and is made up of over 900 staff with a rich and diverse background, skill sets, and experiences.
This is a chance to directly contribute to the way in which both Governments collaborate and negotiate on Justice and Home Affairs Issues. The ideal candidate will be a team player, an effective communicator, strong attention to detail and with the ability deliver at pace.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Provide day to day administrative support to the team: including arranging appointments, information dissemination, and VC/teleconference scheduling, travel bookings.
- Serve as secretariat for key meetings.
- Report and track key subject areas in the media and think tanks, including those relating to justice and home affairs, science and technology, illicit finance and anti-corruption. Monitor Congressional appointments, relevant hearings and track key legislation.
- Process and monitor UK extradition and mutual legal assistance requests.
- Resolve and be the point of contact for complex visa or passport queries. Own the team’s relationship with decision makers in UKVI, HMPO, and US Embassy London’s Visa team.
- Support visit programmes for relevant UK officials. Including Ministerial programmes and the scoping, planning and delivery of the annual Science and Technology bilateral meeting with the Department of Homeland Security.
- A degree in a related field and/or relevant professional experience.
- Interest in homeland security/criminal justice work.
- Ability to deliver reliable results that are of a good quality and meet agreed deadlines, with minimal supervision.
- Effectively problem-solve and prioritize conflicting workloads accordingly.
- Work effectively with others.
- Demonstrate positive communication and interpersonal abilities, including excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to be professional and courteous when dealing directly with key players at a senior level both inside and outside the Embassy.
- Demonstrate positive logistical skills and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to effectively use technology for work, including proficiency in Microsoft applications (ex. Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, etc.).
- Ability to carry-out administrative tasks.
- Ability to conduct research, monitor, and report on key subject areas.
- Fluency in English.
- Legal status to live and work in the US in your own right, from time of application. Please note that we are unable to sponsor visas for this position.
- Holds one of the following passports: UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand.
