EXPLORING CAREER OPTIONS? Consider interning in a field of interest!

Through the President's Promise (at the University Career Center), each student has the chance to engage in a special experience.  Internships allow you to connect the information that you learn in the classroom to real world experiences. Students from any academic level and in any major can benefit from the experience because internships familiarize you with the work environment, give you the opportunity to meet professionals in your field of interest and sometimes lead to full-time employment. Internships can take place anytime during the year; fall, spring, winter and summer.

The following organizations have advertised internships and will be attending the Criminal Justice Career & Internship Fair (www.Careers.umd.edu/CJFair), March 6, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Attend to ask questions, gain more information, make a personal connection and gather application tips.
  • Kohl's Department Stores
  • Liberty Mutual Insurance Group (Claims Dept.)
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia
  • Six Flags America
  • Target Corporation
  • Terrorism Studies Minor (START)
  • Washington/Baltimore HIDTA

You may also talk with the more than 30 other organizations who have registered to inquire about future internship program opportunities.

SEEKING STRATEGIES FOR STANDING OUT TO EMPLOYERS AT THE FAIR? Research the organizations who have advertised internship opportunities prior to attending the fair. You can search for each employer in Careers4Terps (www.Careers.umd.edu/) under the tab “Employer Search” and then “Employer Directory”. You can also gain valuable information from the organization’s website, so that when you attend the fair you can approach employers by saying… “I have researched your organization’s opportunities and know that position xxx requires x, y and z skills. I was wondering are there any additional experiences or qualities that you seek in applicants?”
