Spring 2025 Crime Analysis Section Internship
Location: Gaithersburg, MD
Closing Date: September 27, 2024


The Montgomery County Police Department has an unpaid on-site internship available in its Crime Analysis Section in Gaithersburg, MD for the spring semester of the 2024-2025 academic year. 

Responsibilities
Interns will assist District and Senior Crime Analysts by performing the following tasks:
  • Using record management software to read police reports and create synopses of crimes of importance
  • Identification of crime trends, patterns, series, sprees, hot spots, and suspicious people and activity
  • Recognizing similarities in offender description, modus operandi and target location
  • Using software to produce crime maps and conduct link analysis
  • Interacting with patrol officers, detectives and other analysts to exchange information regarding ongoing crime trends
  • Assisting in the creation of crime bulletins
Opportunities
Interns will have the opportunity to:
  • Earn course credit for the internship under the parameters set forth by the intern’s university
  • Participate in ride-alongs with dispatch and/or patrol
  • Attend meetings involving other crime analysts and/or other department employees Qualifications
  • Internship applicants must successfully pass a background check and be a US citizen or have a valid green card
  • Internship applicants are expected to have a basic understanding of how to operate a computer and its software - multiple different law enforcement software programs will be utilized after training provided by MCPD
  • Interns should at least be an upper-division college student with an educational background in Justice Studies, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Political Science, GIS (Geographic Information System), or another related field
  • Interns are expected to be available between 8 and 24 hours a week depending on the credit hour and internship parameters of the intern’s university
  • Interns typically work anytime Monday to Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm

  • Self-write a 500-word essay that answers “What Is Your Understanding of Crime Analysis and What Do You Hope to Derive from an Internship with the Montgomery County Police Department Crime Analysis Section” 
  • Submit the application, essay and required documentation to Police.VRS@montgomerycountymd.gov
  • All documentation must be submitted no later than Friday, September 27, 2024 at 2359 hrs for consideration
