This position is in the Board of Ethics and Government Accountability (BEGA), Office of Government Ethics. The mission of BEGA is to make the District government more

transparent and ethical through advice, training and enforcement. The Office of Government Ethics interprets and enforces the District’s ethics laws.

The incumbent serves as a Legal Assistant, responsible for supporting the agency’s legal staff in performing legal assistance activities, which require specialized knowledge of legal documents and processes in matters related to the responsibilities of the Office.

Duties and Responsibilities

Supports the agency’s legal staff, performs legal research, and completes technical and clerical assignments involving complex and difficult subject matter, requiring in depth legal research. Reviews legal documents, including but not limited to case files, policies, and procedure documents, to assure that statutes, citations, exhibits, and other relevant materials are correct, complete and conform to pertinent laws, rules, regulations, and office requirements.

Assists in complex investigations. Contacts and interviews litigants and witnesses, compiles and evaluates factual information, records, and data to prepare documents for litigation (e.g., answers to interrogatories and responses to requests for production of documents), and to prepare cases for presentation to the Board.

Assists the attorneys with research and other preparation for the drafting of rulemakings, policy and procedure documents as well as pleadings (e.g., disposition motions, pretrial statements, settlement agreements, interrogatories, responses to requests for production of documents, proposed orders, exhibits, legal correspondence, etc.); and assists attorneys in the settlement of cases.
