Located in the nation’s capital, The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the chief legal office of the District of Columbia. The OAG enforces the laws of the District, defends, and provides legal advice to the District’s government agencies and protects the interests of the District’s residents. This position is located within the Immediate Office.

The Immediate Office sets the direction for the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). It is responsible for establishing the policy priorities that the organization pursues and ensuring that the OAG consistently provides high quality legal services to the District agencies the OAG supports. OAG's Ethics and Compliance Counsel is a member of the Immediate Office, and the office also manages community relations and communications for the OAG.

Duties and Responsibilities 

The incumbent’s primary responsibility is to provide legal support services which facilitate the work of the legal staff of the assigned office. The incumbent may also be responsible for the conduct of in-depth legal research into and analyses of legislative history and precedent cases, decisions, and opinions that may be applicable to particular legal matters.

The Paralegal duties include:

  • Drafts opinions and orders or other legal authority which requires the review analysis and organization of facts and evidence; the analysis of legal issues, the application of law to fact; fact finding; the drawing of legal conclusions and the rendition of clear, effective and precise written presentations.
  • Examines and evaluates information in case files against agency jurisdictional requirements. Investigates, compiles and evaluates factual information in conjunction with varying data, in order to prepare case documents.
  • Drafts responses to motions filed by counsel to be issued by the responsible legal authority. As appropriate or assigned, prepares responses to requests for information and assistance with the parameter of office responsibilities.
  • Performs legal research, including search of statues, regulations, legislative history, case law and other legal authorities on points of law.
  • Reviews case files, studies of pleading, testimony, hearing records and briefs pertinent to assignments. Advises appropriate legal authority on the possible dispositions of matters resulting from reviews.
  • Reviews contents of reports and procedural or policy papers to identify potential problems and to assure consistency with agency policy.
  • Keeps abreast of current legal developments including recent decisions issued by appeals boards, D.C. Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • Conducts orientation sessions for the public with respect to hearing procedures and practices.
