The Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DOCR) provides outstanding work and training experience for interns interested in the field of criminal justice and community corrections.  The work/training program is designed to meet the trainees and the correctional program’s needs.  All interns are eligible to receive academic credit and free Ride-On bus pass.  This is an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in social work or law enforcement.  Internships are available in two service areas listed below.

This internship program provides students an opportunity to combine academic studies with on-the-job training and local government experience.  Undergraduate and graduate students will have an opportunity for unpaid and paid work experience in a progressive local government serving a diverse community.

Pre-Release and Re-Entry Services (PRRS)

The Pre-Release Center (PRC) is a nationally recognized correctional model for community-based correctional and treatment services.  The residential facility is in Rockville, Maryland and is for adult offenders nearing release.  The PRC Program has a strong focus on assessment, case management, employment, treatment, intervention services, education, and family and community involvement.

Work experience at the PRC will include screening, intake and supervision of Residents; Adjustment Board Member; support Case Managers, Work Release Coordinators and Career Resource Center staff; conduct community-based on-site verifications; develop and supervise recreational, MVA and Social Security Administration trips; urinalysis collection and testing; Treatment Team Member; crisis intervention and data collection.

Pre-Trial Services (PTS)

The mission of PTS Unit is to ensure all eligible defendants are afforded the opportunity for Pre-Trial release and to enhance public safety by providing community monitoring and referral to services that increase the likelihood of appearance for trial and to reduce the risk for re-arrest.

Work experience at the PTS Unit will include working with the Pre-Trial Assessment; Pre-Trial Supervision; Alternative Community Services (ACS) and Intervention for Substance Abusers (IPSA) programs.

Important Scheduling Information

  •        Interns are assigned to a supervisor and receive weekly individualized and group training, as well as in-service and on-the-job training.
  •        Interns will be scheduled to work 24 hours per week with a minimum of a four (4) month commitment.
  •        Interns scheduled at the PRRS will work either a Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday schedule with mostly evening hours.
  •        Interns scheduled at PTS will generally work Monday-Friday with daytime/business hours.

Prior to appointment, all applicants must successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation, medical examination, and drug/alcohol screen.

Prior to a promotional appointment within DOCR, the selected individual must answer the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) questions and submit to a criminal history to comply with the Prevention Planning on Hiring and Promotion Decisions (115.17, 115.117, 115.217, 115.317). This is a requirement to meet Federal law and audit standards.
