These positions will be centrally managed by the Professional Development Office (PDO) of the Civil Rights Division. The incumbent will perform legal and factual research and other closely related duties of a complex nature in support of attorneys engaged in civil rights cases and matters.

If selected as a Paralegal Specialist GS-0950-7, typical work assignments may vary based upon the needs of the individual sections, their practice areas, and a host of other factors. Typical assignments, however, can include:

  • Assisting trial attorneys in active prosecutions by documenting and producing discovery material to defense counsel;
  • Organizing and maintaining litigation files;
  • Assisting with coordinating witness pretrial interviews;
  • Drafting routine legal correspondence under the supervision of attorneys;
  • Conducting factual and legal research using computer databases;
  • Cite checking legal authority;
  • Preparing exhibits for display during trial;
  • Assisting with requests for information under the FOIA;
  • Working with the Interactive Case Management (ICM) system to track the status of cases and matters pending in the office;
  • Assisting with general office duties by reviewing and drafting responses to incoming correspondence, analyzing complaints from the public, and communicating your analysis to lead attorneys;
  • Obtaining information from members of the public who contact the office by phone; and
  • Performing privilege reviews under the guidance of an attorney.
