The University of Maryland attracts thousands of students to campus each year. Current students play a crucial role in attracting prospective students to apply and decide to attend UMD through walking tours and other major visit events. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions hosts a series of events and daily visits on campus and selects a diverse group of students to represent the university in this influential role.

As a University of Maryland Tour Guide Coordinator, you will help coordinate the tour guide group under the purview of the professional staff of the Undergraduate Admissions Events and Visit Services team. You will assist in various key areas to ensure the tour guide group functions smoothly. In addition to leading tours, you will play a vital role in the operational aspects of the tour guide program.

Training & Recruitment (2 Students):

  • Expected to work 6-8 hours per week, including a minimum of one tour per week
  • Assist the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in tour guide training and recruitment efforts under the direction of the Events and Visit Services team.
  • Serve as a resource for new and prospective tour guides during and after training and recruitment.
  • Ensure tour guides are prepared to give up-to-date campus tours and answer any questions visitors may have.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks throughout the year to ensure tour guides adhere to expectations for tour quality.
  • Identify recruitment opportunities for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, such as the First Look Fair held in September.
  • Provide the Events and Visit Services team with feedback on tour guide application materials and the hiring process.
  • Assist with the new tour guide interview and scheduling process as needed.
  • Identify opportunities to educate the University of Maryland community about campus tours and the tour guide group to gain visibility across campus.
  • Promote opportunities for tour guides to learn about the University of Maryland’s commitment to creating a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all.

Scheduling, Tour Routes, & Special Events (2 Students):

  • Expected to work 6-8 hours per week, including a minimum of one tour per week.
  • Ensure proper staffing for all Undergraduate Admissions daily visits, group tours, special tour requests, and events.
  • Ensure proper staffing for virtual tours (i.e. Virtual Admitted Student Open House)
  • Collaborate with the Events and Visit Services team to staff high school group visits and any approved special tour requests.
  • Manage coordination of backup tour guides in case of absences.
  • Assist in creating tour routes for daily visits, special requests, and new routes due to campus construction, under the direction of the Events and Visit Services team.
  • Develop tour routes for all on-campus events and special programs with the direction of the Events and Visit Services team.
  • Assist with coordinating event tour ticket distribution and management on the day of events and special programs.

Other General Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide a minimum of one tour during daily visits, group tours, and/or events per week.
  • Participate in student panels during programs, if needed.
  • Assist with special projects with our Marketing and Communications team, including social media posts, communication campaigns before or after events, and daily visits.
  • Attend all required training as set forth by your direct supervisor.
  • Serve as a professional representative of the University of Maryland and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Must be a full-time University of Maryland undergraduate student.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively convey information and serve as a resource for new and prospective tour guides.
  • Previous tour guide experience will be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver engaging and informative campus tours, showcasing the University of Maryland experience to visitors.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to coordinate training sessions, recruitment efforts, and tour schedules effectively.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to ensuring tour quality and adherence to established standards.
  • Proactive approach to identifying recruitment opportunities and promoting the tour guide program within the University community.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances and manage tour guide scheduling and event coordination.
  • Ability to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all guests and visitors, aligning with the University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Availability to work 6-8 hours per week, including a minimum of one tour per week, and participate in major on-campus events as needed.
