Beyond the Classroom - Now Accepting Applications for Fall 2016

Are you dedicated to making an impact in the world? Are you looking for opportunities that align with your passion? Beyond the Classroom is a great opportunity for students interested in engaging in public service and social change, whether that be through mobilizing, criminal just reform, government action, or a wide range of other vehicles of change! As a BTC student you will get the opportunity to:
  • Explore civic issues that matter to YOU
  • Engage in community service and civic learning activities
  • Gain real-world experience through high-quality internships      
  • Receive a “Civic Engagement” notation on your transcript


Students gain an interdisciplinary foundation and apply their skills in civic engagement and social change in a global context across 3 courses (7 credits). Past students have interned in locations such as, American Security Project, Department of Homeland Security, Conflict Resolution Center, Montgomery County Abused Persons Program, and many more! Students also lead change in local communities! Past student initiatives included raising awareness about sexual violence at UMD and seeking solutions to food issues in College Park, among many other.

Applications for Fall 2016 are accepted on a rolling basis. The final deadline to apply is May 6, 2016.
