Fall 2023 Justice Reinvestment Intern

The Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services seeks a Justice Reinvestment intern for Fall 2023 in our Criminal Justice division. You will work alongside the Director of Justice Reinvestment and collaborate with various external stakeholders to include the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Department of Health, Administrative Office of the Courts, Maryland State Commission on Criminal Sentencing Policy, local corrections, and other agencies involved in implementation of Justice Reinvestment legislation.
Primary functions of this position will include supporting the implementation of the Justice Reinvestment Act (JRA) and the Justice Reinvestment Oversight Board, assisting with the reporting of performance measures to stakeholders, managing capacity building opportunities, and assisting in coordinating various Workgroup meetings.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist with preparation and planning of regular meetings, which include the Justice Reinvestment Oversight Board, Justice Reinvestment Advisory Board, Justice Reinvestment Coordinating Committee, and various JRA-related working groups (50%)
- Support research and development of reports such as the Annual Justice Reinvestment Report and various Workgroup findings and recommendations reports (20%)
- Review and summarize grant program activities as reported by grantees through the Performance Incentive Grant Fund (20%)
- Other tasks as assigned (10%)
The successful candidate will:
- Be enrolled in a Criminal Justice, social sciences, or a related field.
- Possess a demonstrated interest in criminal justice-related subjects including law enforcement, corrections, prosecution, or courts.
- Have a strong desire to engage and learn about the criminal justice system.
- Possess excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Have experience working with government officials and stakeholders.
- Be detail-oriented.
- Have strong organizational skills.
Program Highlights:
- Program Dates: August 2023-December 2023, up to 30 hours per week.
- This 12-week program provides students interested in criminal justice with rewarding and substantive work assignments that contribute to the mission of the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services to improve public safety in Maryland.
- This program provides an opportunity to network with professionals from the Governor’s Office of Crime Prevention, Youth, and Victim Services, the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, Department of Health, Administrative Office of the Courts, Maryland State Commission on Criminal Sentencing Policy, local corrections, and other agencies and others who will support professional growth and career interests.
- Learned outcomes or skills learned throughout this program include developing work habits and attitudes necessary for career success in the criminal justice field; receiving informal feedback and mentoring from the Director of Justice Reinvestment; developing communication, interpersonal, and other critical skills necessary for success in the workforce; and building a record of professional work experience in the public sector.
