Qualifications

Internships are open to qualified undergraduate and graduate students who are capable of working independently with guidance. Students should be self-motivated, have good communication and writing skills, be comfortable working in the community, and be conversational in Spanish. Must be located in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, preference given to applicants residing between Baltimore, Maryland and Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Application Requirements

Qualified applicants should submit the documents listed below via email to Abel Olivo at abel@defensoresdelacuenca.org
  • A short narrative (no more than three paragraphs) of your experience or desire to work with the Spanish-speaking community in nature or environmental related themes and topics;
  • One-page resume;
  • One letter of recommendation (personal, academic, or work).
Internship Requirements

The successful applicant is expected to fulfill the following requirements during the time of the internship:
  • Engage the community to participate in events and programs
  • Be present at events as the coordinator
  • Help manage the social media engagements
  • Guide program participants in project development
  • Write a weekly report on activities, as well as a final report
  • Work independently and meet deadlines
  • Give a presentation at various events
  • Write four blog posts during your time as an intern related to the work and help formulate the outlet for blog posts.

Financial Support

Defensores de la Cuenca will provide a stipend totaling $5,000; $1,000 will be paid every two weeks, paid on the 15th and last day of the month. A final payment of $1,000 is made upon receipt of the final report at the end of the 10 weeks. Interns should expect to work 10 weeks during the summer (June through August). 35 hour work week and must be available to work weekend.

Transportation: Applicants must provide their own transportation.
