The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in the study of Communities, Crime & Criminal Justice in Detroit (C3JD) is an intensive eight-week summer research program (May 22, 2023 to July 14, 2023) that will connect nine undergraduate students with faculty and graduate students from the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Wayne State University in research examining crime and justice in Detroit, Michigan. The students selected for this research training program will receive a $4800 stipend, free lodging on campus, and a living stipend for food, etc.

The C3JD-REU site is funded by the National Science Foundation (award #2051292) with the mission of promoting undergraduate student interest in and preparation for academic research and/or as policymakers and practitioners who are well equipped to prioritize evidence-based practices throughout their careers.

Prospective sophomores and juniors from the United States who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree are encouraged to apply. The C3JD-REU is committed to increasing the involvement of groups who are historically under-represented in criminology and criminal justice graduate programs, including racial/ethnic minorities, women, and first-generation students.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Prospective sophomores and juniors in good standing

• Enrolled as undergraduate students at their college/university in the spring & fall of 2023 (i.e. students graduating before December of 2023 will not be eligible)

• U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States

• Able to participate in a full-time, in-person experience in Detroit for eight weeks from 5/22/2023 to 7/14/2023

Please be advised that you’ll be asked to upload the following documents at the end of your application:

1) a personal statement of no longer than 1.5 pages that speaks to your personal background, academic and career goals, and interest in attending the C3JD NSF-REU

2) the most recent version of your unofficial transcripts

3) a copy of your CV or professional resume

4) a document with the names and email addresses of two references that we can contact if you advance to the second stage of the application process

The selection committee will begin review of applications immediately after the deadline and contact finalists by mid-to-late March to schedule Zoom interviews.
