About Us
The Petey Greene Program supports the academic goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through high-quality volunteer tutoring programs, while educating volunteers on the injustice manifest in our carceral system. We envision a world in which all incarcerated people have access to high-quality academic programs and we strive to inspire our alumni - both students and tutors - to become advocates, and to take on leadership roles that reimagine the criminal legal system.
We operate the largest multi-state tutoring program, placing nearly 1,000 volunteers annually to tutor 2,500 justice-impacted people in seven states and the District of Columbia. PGP is headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, but the majority of our 23 employees work remotely in their respective regions.
The Role
The Petey Greene Program is seeking Volunteer Coordinators to support the implementation of our high school and college bridge programs in the D.C. Region. Volunteer Coordinators will support the Regional Manager or the College Bridge Program Coordinator with the smooth-running of the D.C. programs, from recruitment and onboarding of our volunteer tutors, to managing the coordination of them throughout the semester.
This role provides individuals with the opportunity to develop skills in relationship management, recruitment, guided project management and proficiency using Salesforce, one of the world’s largest CRM platforms. You will be given mentorship and support from our team of expert colleagues at every stage. Furthermore, Petey Greene Program employees have access to a wealth of resources (including reading material, webinars and training opportunities around educational justice and the criminal legal system) and opportunities to engage with like-minded colleagues on these issues during weekly meetings.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Vet volunteer tutor applications and conduct interviews, in collaboration with PGP staff and campus leadership teams
Support with assigning tutors to PGP programs and creating their schedules
Support with onboarding, training, orientation and facility clearance processes to place volunteer tutors onto our programs
Monitor tutor attendance, feedback and follow up with any necessary support requests, and provide reminders for tutors who have not submitted attendance forms
Support with the coordination of weekly transportation for in-person volunteers and the reimbursement of the associated transportation costs
Coordinate and manage tutor data via Salesforce and Google Workspace
Support with offboarding of tutors at the end of the semester, including reminding tutors to complete debriefs and evaluations
Be a point of contact for volunteer tutors, especially if an incident occurs or a tutor misses a tutoring session, and flag issues to the Program Coordinators when necessary
Option to participate in weekly all-staff meetings
Competencies
The ideal candidate would have:
Proficiency in Google Workspace
Attention to detail and very strong organization and time management skills
The ability to communicate effectively and professionally via email and phone, in a timely manner
The ability to work autonomously and proactively, whilst also working well as part of a team
The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and prioritize accordingly
Awareness of issues related to mass incarceration and broader social justice concerns is preferred
Proficiency with Canva and Salesforce would be considered a bonus
This role is eligible for internship/academic credit and Federal Work Study only. It cannot be offered as a paid or voluntary role. However, The Petey Greene Program can provide support for those who are not sure how to get connected to payment for this role via Federal Work Study.
To apply, please email a Resume and Cover Letter to abinns@peteygreene.org by March 31, 2023.
Diversity, equity and inclusion are foundational to the Petey Greene Program's work. We also believe that this work should be led by system-impacted people, whose perspectives and direct knowledge of the problems are necessary to achieving freedom and educational justice.
The PGP defines system-impacted as a person who by their own experience, family experience, school experiences, and/or communal experiences has previous interaction or involvement with and who is legally, economically, familially, or psychologically affected by the criminal legal system. Interaction or involvement with the criminal legal system includes arrest and/or detainment, appearance in criminal courts, incarceration, immigrant detention, juvenile detention, parole, and/or probation.
We strongly encourage system-impacted people, people of color, LGBTQIA+ people, and women to apply. The Petey Greene Program is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate in its personnel decisions based on race, ancestry, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital/domestic partner status, religion, age, disability status, veteran status, or former incarceration status.
